Description

Family owned, Dog Point is one of the oldest privately established vineyards in the Marlborough region with plantings established over 40 years ago.The winery holds New Zealand’s largest certified organic vineyard area by BioGro New Zealand. Biodiversity is present on the property with native plantings and walkways, an organic vegetable garden, orchards, beehives, olive and pine nut trees. The vineyard’s topography is unique to Marlborough, taking in hillside blocks and flat land parcels, with clay and silty loams. All fruit (including the sauvignon blanc) is hand-picked from low cropped vines. Wines are bottled without fining and minimal filtration, a reflection of their low interventionist ethos.

About this wine and vintage from the winemakers: Budburst began in Spring with only a few minor frost events. A respectable yield was achieved despite cool and grey conditions during flowering. A wet start to summer created a challenging growing season in the vineyard before returning to settled dry weather allowing the vines to ripen in beautiful conditions.

Comprising six different pinot noir clones from vines dating back to 1983. Vines are cropped at 5 tonnes/ha (35hl/ha), hand harvested and hand sorted, prior to de-stemming (25% whole bunch included). The fruit is fermented in small stainless open top fermenters without pumping. Fermentation is conducted by indigenous yeasts over a period of 2-3 weeks prior to pressing into French oak barrels (30% new) for 18 months. 13% alc.

“Moderately deep, bright ruby in colour.  On the nose, a complex array of smoke and old fashioned roses lead on this brooding and dark berry scented Pinot. Notes of spice and charcuterie add further intrigue. The palate is loaded with dark berries, sweet cherry and hints of French oak. Finely woven acidity and fine-grained, chalky tannins give freshness on the palate. A youthful rendition of Dog Point, this wine has an age worthy backbone and will reward further cellaring for 10+ years.  This wine has all the makings of a long lived Marlborough pinot noir and matches perfectly with duck, red meats (particularly venison and lamb), and mushroom dishes.”

Newly arrived vintage and arguably from a much better vintage in 2023 …. review for 2022 – 96 points, Shanteh Wale, Halliday Wine Companion “…  cherry compote, blue plum skin and rhubarb stem. The selected 25% whole bunch adds just the right amount of sinewy, woodsy herbs backed by savoury potting clay and tree bark. Red lingonberries pop like caviar on the mid-palate and the staying power of graceful but astute tannins is why this wine will age like a dream. This is built for almost any medium rare meat you can throw at it – lamb, game or grass-fed beef. It’s a wine for the very best crystal and only the best of friends for company. Stunning.”
