Description
Delamere Vineyards is one of Tasmania’s longest running family owned and operated wine estates, focused on producing distinguished sparkling (Methode Traditionelle) and still wines from the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varieties. Nestled amongst the cool maritime slopes of Pipers River, in north eastern Tasmania, the vineyard was first established in 1982 placing it amongst the oldest vineyards in the region. With 6.5ha of grapes now established on the property, the age of the vineyard makes it a rare resource in Tasmania, and valuable due to the significant increase in wine quality associated with mature vines. The winery is owned and run by husband and wife vigneron’s Shane Holloway and Fran Austin (formerly of Bay of Fires).
From the winemakers: “Our passion for the region of Tasmania, at similar latitude to the Champagne and Burgundy regions in France, arises from a desire to seek out a genuine cold climate that can produce wines of classic structure, combining fruit intensity with refinement, complexity with persistence of flavour, and the ultimate expression of grape and region. The region of Pipers Brook in the north east of Tasmania enjoys a significant climatic advantage that is unique in Australia, that of a very low variability of maximum temperature. This stability is born from a unique set of geographical features, the hot northerly winds are cooled by the waters of Bass Strait, while the cool southerlies gain heat as they cross the island. This, combined with cool, relative temperatures and significant sunshine hours make for ideal conditions to retain delicate aromas. The frosty and sometimes wild conditions of winter give way to clear, crisp, blue sky days through the growing season, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly, assuring a lingering acidity essential to producing premium cool climate varietals.
About this vintage from the winemaker: “The winter prior to the 2021 vintage was one of the driest on record for northern Tasmania, and that theme of rare events was set to continue. Of course, there was the one-in-100-year pandemic, then the good people of Launceston awoke to a few centimetres of snow on 5 th of August, a sight not seen since 1921! The pendulum continued to swing, with the north of the state experiencing one of the warmest springs on record. That combined with solid October rainfall, and the vines burst out of the gates with exuberant growth. Some solid rainfall events and warm nights ensured this growth continued well into summer, but it became evident at Delamere that the rain events had had a detrimental effect on fruit set, with a degree of ‘hen and chicken’ in most blocks. And then, at that critical time of late summer/early autumn, when the fruit begins to soften and the sugars accumulate, the rain stopped. We were blessed with perfect ripening conditions; warmer than average night, and average temperatures during the day, such that the flavours evolved gently and patiently to their full potential, gaining depth and complexity whilst losing nothing. The resulting wines are quite magnificent in their depth of flavour, finesse, and balance. It’s a shame there isn’t more of them, but with quality like this, it hardly seems appropriate to complain.”
“The Pinot Noir was hand harvested from vines on the Delamere vineyard aged between 20 and 40 years. We included roughly 30% whole bunches in most of the ferments, with each commencing fermentation with wild yeast in open top vessels. Plunging was adjusted day by day to balance the tannin extraction with the fruit concentration in each fermenter, and a period of soaking on skins post-ferment rounded out the structure. Each parcel was pressed off after two to three weeks and filled to Burgundian-coopered barriques to mature. Thoughtful handling and time on fine yeast sediment in oak has resulted in an alluring texture that is, at the same time, firm, powerful and silky. This frames to perfection the complex, rich but elegant, fruit of the 2021 vintage.”
Do not miss out this pedigree Pinot it is an absolute bargain!
98 points and Best of the Best Pinot Noirs in James Halliday 2024 Australian Wine Companion “30% whole bunches. Typically Tasmanian, this deep-though-brightly coloured wine leans towards magenta on the rim. A convocation of red, blue, purple and black cherries illuminates the bouquet, but doesn’t warn you of the sheer intensity of a spectacular palate that shouts Vosne-Romanée from the rooftops. There’s both textural and spicy/savoury pinot essence at work, making it impossible to wait its turn Drink to 2037″
