“It’s pretty clear by now that Dappled is an out-and-out star producer. One of the very best. The value is extraordinary but quality is the main take-home.” – Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
Awarded “Best New Winery” James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2018 & Young Gun of Wine 2017
“Owner and winemaker Shaun Crinion was introduced to wine in 1999, working for his winemaker uncle at Laetitia Winery and Vineyards on the central coast of California. His career since then has been so impressive I can’t cut it short, so here (with minor abbreviations) it is in full: 2000 Devil’s Lair, Margaret River; Corbett Canyon Vineyard, California; ’02 Houghton, Middle Swan; ’03 De Bortoli, Hunter Valley; ’04-06 Pipers Brook, Tasmania; ’06 Bay of Fires,Tasmania; ’06-07 Williams Selyem, California; ’08 Domaine Chandon, Yarra Valley; ’10 Domaine de Montille, Burgundy.” James Halliday Wine Companion.
Dappled started in 1999 “.. with a view to make high quality, unadulterated wines from special patches of dirt at realistic prices. These wines were first and foremost for my family and friends, so a hand-crafted, minimal intervention philosophy just made perfect sense to me – and still continues today.” Shaun Crinion.
This wine is a blend of premium cool upper Yarra vineyards and selected Valley floor sites (Including Steels Creek, Denton, Swallowfield, predominately MV6 clone with a small amount of D5V12) that practice sustainable viticulture. Minimal intervention winemaking; cold soak, wild yeast, foot plunging, open ferments, 30% whole bunch with natural MLF and only 15% new oak. 10 months on full lees with no additions except SO2. Bottled by gravity, un-fined and unfiltered.
About this release from winemaker Shaun Crinion .. “Deep crimson red in colour, this wine has a soft perfumed nose with brambly red berry fruits. It builds complexity with a gentle amount of charry oak nuances in the background. The palate displays round and sweet red and dark fruits with a fine tannin profile; flavours continue fanning out with the fresh acid and mineral drive.”
This delicious Pinot overdelivers on quality and flavour.. Recommend decanting this wine or opening early to breathe.
Brand new release .. review for previous vintage 2018 .. 93+points Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “$30 is the new $20 in pinot noir land, you could argue. You’d be hard pressed to find a better quality pinot noir at this price level, with maybe one or two exceptions.
It’s taut, reductive, smoky and spicy. It has a lot going on but the fruit is ripe, the inflections autumnal and the texture has some velvet to it. The carry on the finish is impressive too. It’s light-ish in colour, it has that Upper Yarra look about it, and both acidity and tannin put in more than their two cents’ worth. I can’t fault it.
It should mature and evolve deliciously.”
