Description
Situated in the cool climate of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges Curly Flat has long been regarded as one of Australia’s finest producers of Pinot Noir. Curly Flat owes its success to Phillip Moraghan and Jeni Kolkka’s fanatical attention to the vineyard started in 1989 – one of the coolest grape growing regions in mainland Australia…perfectly suited to chardonnay and pinot noir. The site with its elevation of 560 metres and location south of the Great Dividing Range produces innately high natural acidity. 100% estate grown fruit, biodynamic practices, no herbicides, natural fertilisers and fastidious attention in the vineyard, picking only ripe fruit has reaped rewards. Jancis Robinson MW (aka the queen of wine) is a big fan “… some of the finest Australian Pinot Noir I have encountered..” and James Halliday calls them “ the chardonnay and pinot noir superstar of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges”. Jenni took full ownership and operation of the winery in 2017 and the winemaking is now in the capable hands of former Shadowfax winemaker, Mark Harrop.
2018 is here.. top notch new release!
About this release from the winemaker: “2017 .. a year of moderates. Not a day over 40 degrees, warm days extending into February and March coupled with cool nights giving us slow, steady (perfect!) ripening conditions. This season without extremes allowed great balance and elegance.. and aromoatics”
Reviews of 2017
96 points, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2020 “Entices immediately with heady aromas, all spiced cherries, pips, warm earth, autumn leaves and borage. But the palate is the clincher. Glossy yet fine tannins, graceful, lithe and long. Lovely wine.”
95+ points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “The main thing I like here, is that there’s an earthy/mineral thing going on that sets it apart from the pack. Cherry, strawberry, spice, mint, autumnal, yet still bright with cranberry acidity, wonderful graphite tannin, a coolness and composure without compromising this sort of salt-of-the-earth integrity thingy. Finish is pure and mineral infused, with insistent tannin pushing it long. Fair to say I think this is very good, with more to come.”
