“One of Central Otago’s top producers” Bob Campbell – Master of Wine
Chicago wine importer Marquis Savage fell in love with Central Otago on what was meant to be a quick tour of the region. Falling in love meant purchasing 24 hectares in the Cromwell basin, which were subsequently planted with clones specific to soil type and in accordance with biodynamic principles. Enlisted to help in this task was Ted Lemon of Littorai, who brought with him more than three decades of practical knowledge of terroir winegrowing based on experience in Burgundy, California and Oregon.Born-and-bred Central Otago talent Claire Mullholland, formerly of Martinborough Vineyards and Amisfield, takes charge of the winemaking, realising the bright, lively, profound potential of these vineyards year in, year out. Biodynamic producer
“If you crave thoroughly pure, complex, and lavish Pinot Noirs, Burn Cottage’s flagship estate bottling will put you in a blissful stupor. Aside from full-on biodynamics in the vineyard and a scrupulous cellar regimen that would cause a number of Burgundian old-timers to take copious notes, these Pinot Noirs are currently equipped with some of the most doting and consistently high praise of contemporary times”. Ian Cauble – Master Sommelier
From winemaker Claire Mulholland “A very good season for growth, with the farm and vineyard experiencing periods of rain regularly. Some drier more classic Central Otago spells experienced in January and February, and healthy plants were vibrant and strong in both vineyard and property throughout the season. We had some frost to navigate in April, but around this a favourable slow extended ripening. Overall the seasons temperatures were moderate, which preserved wonderful balance and acidity.
Layers of interest with aromatics of redcurrant, bright cherry and floral notes underpinned by savory hints of tea, earth and fern. The palate is vibrant and focused, supported with seamless balance and finesse. Lovely integration and flow with polished tannins that lend persistence through the palate. Cellaring potential of 8-10 years.”
96 points and Top 100 Wines of 2022 by The Wine Spectator “Aromatic and expressive, with notes of tarragon, sage and white pepper mingling with fresh, juicy flavours of raspberry, cherry and pomegranate. This is clearly defined and focussed, with firm tannins providing wonderful structure for the long, complex finish, where a note of dried lavender lingers. Drink now through 2030.”
96 points, Bob Campbell MW for The Real Review “Intense, vibrant pinot noir showing real depth and complexity with nuanced floral, dark cherry and raspberry flavours together with thyme, anise, spice and a suggestion of white pepper. A backbone of fruity acidity reveals energy and helps to promote a lingering finish. A serious wine from one of Central Otago’s top producers”.
94 points, Top 100 Wines of New Zealand 2021, Nick Stock for jamessuckling.com “Cherries, flowers and sweet spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Round and creamy with a caressing texture and a fruity edge. Long finish. Fresh and very fine. Elegant is the word. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”
