Description
Must try the wines from this leading Kiwi pinot noir producer in Bannockburn, a sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand. Central Otago produces extraordinary pinot noir that is incredibly consistent .. all the rain falls in Milford on the western side of the alps so Bannockburn and Gibbston Valley in CO to the east of the alps are in a rain shadow. Akarua, run by the Skeggs family are the largest privately owned single estate vineyard in Central Otago. Seriously impressive pinot and not surprisingly has won gongs and accolades galore.
The Skeggs family planted the first vines on Akarua’s estate vineyard in 1996. They now have over 100 hectares having acquired the neighbouring vineyard a few years back and more recently, two established vineyards in Felton Road and Lowburn. As one of the first to commit to a large-scale investment into Central Otago Pinot Noir, Sir Clifford Skeggs was able to secure one of the best north facing sites in what is now recognised as Central Otago’s premium winegrowing sub-region, Bannockburn. The vineyard itself consists of many smaller blocks established on the gentle sloping hills that roll down to the Kawarau River where it enters Lake Dunstan. The distinct differences in the fruit from these blocks give Akarua’s Pinot Noirs a high level of fruit derived complexity. Akarua has spared no expense with the design and build of its winery specifically tailored to first class Pinot Noir production. Akarua is now among the top tier of Central Otago producers. Akarua has been accredited under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand since 2002.
Selected from the best blocks within Akarua’s vineyard holdings, all in the premium sub region of Bannockburn, this is one of the best examples the region has to offer. It displays intense black fruit flavours, complexity and the fine tannins that Bannockburn Pinot Noir is renowned for; along with lifted aromas of sweet violet, mocha and Black Forest chocolate cake. The palate is finely balanced with red and black fruits, spices and an underlying earthiness. Finely textured tannins lead to a persistent and elegant finish…..in the David vs Goliath world that is Central Otago, this wine stands firmly on its own two feet and proudly over delivers for the money.

Five Stars; 19/20 – Raymond Chan, 2017 “…Full, even, ruby-red colour with slight purple tints on the edge. The nose is very elegant in proportion with refined and concentrated, fragrant aromas of dark-red cherry nd berry fruit with plum nuances, and hints of liquorice with a layering of spicy oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate has elegantly rich and concentrated flavours of dark-red cherry and berry fruit with plums, notes of liquorice and spicy oak. The fruit has good depth and intensity, with fine-grained, flowery tannin extraction in support with integrated, balanced acidity. The palate flows smoothly along a refined line, leading to an elegant, sustained finish of cherries, liquorice and spices. This is a beautifully elegant, refined Pinot Noir with intense cherry and berry fruit with herb, liquorice and spicy oak interest on a fine-grained palate. Match with poultry and pork, and with Asian or Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 6-7+ years.”
