Description
This cutting edge McLaren Vale producer is making delicious energetic estate grown wines from it’s biodynamic vineyards. We were bowled over by every wine in their line up of a tasting recently (a rare occurrence). Gnarly old bush vines planted in 1946 in Kangarilla, Mclaren Vale, handpicked, rigorous selection, sorting table, wild ferment with portion of whole bunch followed by 12 mths maturation in old French oak. This old vine grenache is seriously darn delicious! Purity of plums, dark cherries with intensity and depth of fruit more-ish complexity and minerality. Layers of earthiness, aniseed, spice, tar, roast meat are revealed on the palate after decanting…
“Venerable vines, fastidious viticulture and cutting-edge winemaking kit. It’s a killer combination, and the reason why Yangarra is producing some of the best wines in the Vale right now.” – Max Allen, The Weekend Australian, March 2013
92 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front … “There’s both varietal and regional integrity dripping from this wine’s pores. It has a jubey-fruit-filled centre but it’s otherwise dry and minerally and blessedly pure. It’s like munching on the dense-flavoured Grenache grapes themselves. It also tastes of brine, liquorice and earth and rumbles with tannin through the finish. Terrific wine growing and making, and therefore drinking.” – 19 May 2014
92+ points Jeremy Pringle, Wine Will Eat Itself …”Muscular, ferrous tannin flexes underneath a veneer of silkiness. It remains meaty, earthen, peaty and primal but all those savoury traits that anchor the wine are lit up by dark cherries, potpourri and sweet-salty licorice. This is Grenache that goes beyond the idea of juicy primary fruit into true vinous engagement and provocative structural edifice.
90 + Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate … “Medium garnet-purple in color and redolent of warm black cherries and ripe black raspberries alongside nuances of black and white pepper and a touch of anise, the medium to full-bodied 2012 Grenache offers plenty of mouth-filling black and red berry preserves flavors, it has a good backbone of medium level, sandy tannins and a refreshing acid line before finishing long and peppery. Drink it now to 2018+.”
