S T O C K I S L I M I T E D !
The hallmarks of the extraordinary Wendouree wines to me are fruit power, concentration (more old world savoury fruit rather than overt sweet fruit – all wines are at 13% alcohol) and firm, tightly wound minerally tannins. All the hard work has been done for you here – the wines have been perfectly cellared for over a decade and are drinking beautifully now .. with plenty of structure and life to reward cellaring into the next decade.
A bit of background ….
The iconic and historic Wendouree vineyard was planted in the Clare Valley in 1893 and is renowned for its full bodied reds which are often described as “iron fist in a velvet glove”. Minuscule yields from ancient (many untrellised) bush vines of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, mataro and malbec. Stephen George has been winemaker there since 1981 and described the vineyard as “…an incredible place – even in severe drought the vineyard is green when the rest of Clare is irrigating madly – the dry grown vineyard roots have burrowed down so deep over the years to find water and all the trace elements needed..” Andrew Caillard MW commented: “.. the wines are strongly recognisable with the emphasis on fruit power concentration and weight. The tannin structure are tightly knit and incredibly muscular”.

About the wines:
Wendouree Cabernet Malbec 2012: 97 points, James Halliday “An 80/20% blend, the colour impeccable; I have always enjoyed this wine, the two varieties providing an exercise in the synergy that blends can bring to the table. Without diminishing the structure or power of the wine, it has a juicy mouthfeel, not to mention a mouthful, of cassis and plum fruit, the tannins quite fine, drawing out the finish. Drink : Now – 2052″
97 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Blackberry, flicker of capsicum/stalk, aniseed/licorice, roses, cedar. Medium bodied, sweeping perfect firm ripe tannin and just right ripeness of fruit backed with quality oak. Length to burn. There’s a bit of tension in this wine – definition, clarity and purpose – and little in the way of excess; the vines like an athlete at the peak of their powers – experience and strength. Just watch it run. Drink : Now – 2042”
Wendouree Malbec 2012:
95 points, James Halliday “Deep, healthy colour; no other winery in Australia can match the depth and structure of Wendouree Malbec; its fragrant bouquet of spiced plums and prunes leads into a complex palate that opens with identical juicy fruit flavours, but closes with firm tannins on the long finish. Drink : Now – 2037”
95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Surely this must be among the world’s finest Malbecs? Dried rose perfume, blood plum, light mocha oak, dusty roads in summer. Medium bodied, so dense but not heavy, fat pillow of tannin, acidity bang on. Length so good. Great fruit, uncluttered by artifice. It’s 95 or 96 points. Never made up my mind, but should you be lucky enough to taste it, let me know. Drink : Now – 2030”
Wendouree Shiraz Mataro 2013
96 points, James Halliday “The mataro is very evident in the structure and texture of the wine, adding a savoury/spicy/earthy element. Once again, the overall balance is exemplary – as is the length. Its charms are less immediately obvious, but the end impression is of a totally delicious wine. Drink : Now – 2043+”
95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “A blend of Shiraz (70%) and Mataro from 1893 Central and 1919 Eastern vineyard plantings, and 1920 Eastern vineyard bush vines. Love the difference the Mataro makes here. Of the three Shiraz based wines, this is my favourite. Plum, black tea and tar, blueberry, licorice, cocoa and dried herb perfume. Medium bodied, almost silky and supple, with a beautiful run of fine grained tannin, fresh acidity and a savoury/fruit sweet finish of immaculate length. Has a bit of X factor, and feels composed and self-assured, even as a young wine. Excellent. Drink : Now – 2033+”
Wendouree Shiraz Malbec 2013
96 points, James Halliday “Fractionally brighter hue than some of its siblings; a strikingly lively palate, with juicy berry fruits to the fore. There is real synergy to be had here, lifting the flavours and the mouthfeel, and building layers of flavour which grow and grow each time you come back to it. Drink : Now – 2043+”
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “A blend of Shiraz (50%) and Malbec from 1919 and 1920 Eastern vineyard plantings. Plum, licorice, dried herbs, blackberry and a smattering of gum leaf. Medium bodied, slaty and almost bloody, distinct mineral tannin, rosy mouth perfume, grip of tannin and an inky mineral laced finish. Has a lightness to it, feels almost airy, but carries grip and authority too. The combination of Shiraz and Malbec this vintage make for strange, yet interesting, bedfellows. Drink : Now – 2030+”
