“I can’t think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound … an unprecedented level of consistency and quality across their entire range.” ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous Media
For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo. The overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations.
The Perbacco is made from 100% Nebbiolo parcels all planted in the Barolo region from vines (average 35 years old) from Barolo sites : Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Rocchettevino, Pernanno, Ravera di Monforte and Scarrone. Fruit selection here was more open and approachable than that selected for Barolo followed by 2 years maturation in cask. Luca gives this extraordinary Perbacco all the love and attention in the vineyard with the same yields, vinification and aging period as for their Barolo Castiglione.
This 2011 release is stunning baby Barolo which overdelivers for quality and price ..allows Barolo lovers to enjoy the vintage years before their Barolos are ready–and do it at a fraction of the cost! Do not miss out here. Will cellar for 5 to 10 years
Max Allen, The Australian, July 14 “.. is easily as good as many other producers’ serious Barolos at twice the price; entrancing floral red fruit and brick-dusty tannin.”
92 points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front .. “Perbacco, meaning for Bacchus, is the entry level Nebbiolo from Vietti being, essentially, the components that don’t make the grade/style for their Barolo Castiglione. Aniseed and licorice all sorts, black fruit, big warm chewy grippy black tea and mineral tannin – thick and rolling – but still fresh with raspberry and cherry coming through on the finish. Ground spices too. Almost a menthol mouth perfume here, which is lovely. Left it for a day and looked better and more composed. This is pretty bold and ballsy Neb, and likely the shape of things to come from this vintage.”
