Description

Kym Teusner was crowned king by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine as 07 Young Winemaker of the Year.

A wine that displays copious amounts of fresh red berry fruits (grenache) and dusty tobacco leaf, without the intrusion of oak influence. A splash of mataro adds to the earthy complexity, whilst a little shiraz is used for structure and weight.

For anyone who have ever met my then business partner Mick Page and I, it would come as no surprise to learn that the idea for Teusner Wines was conceived at the pub over a few beers. Sitting at the bar, we’d been listening to a couple of old growers have a whine about the low, low prices being paid for their old vine Grenache… to the point they were going to rip out the vines and plant Chardonnay! Now whilst we’re not adverse to the odd glass of Chardonnay, planting it in the Barossa Valley is akin to drinking light beer… just not on! So it was left to Mick and I to hatch a rescue plan. Scrambling together some cash, the grapes found a new home, the vines stayed in the ground where they belong and Teusner Wines was born. That first wine, like Mick’s first son, was called Joshua.” Kym Teusner.

About this vintage from the winemaker:  “The 2024 vintage was defined by contrast. Spring rains recharged the soils, though cool, damp weather into December slowed vine growth and led to a lighter set across many vineyards. January delivered moderate temperatures, followed by one of the driest ripening periods in recent memory. The extended warm, mild conditions, combined with naturally low yields, allowed for steady, even ripening and the development of delicate yet concentrated flavours. Grenache thrived in the long, warm ‘Indian Summer,’ while Mataro and Shiraz benefitted from the extended hang time, building depth and balance. In summary, 2024 produced wines of intensity and detail, with a freshness and vibrancy that reflect both the season and the essence of the Barossa Valley.

The blend  – 61% Grenache, 29% Mataro, 10% Shiraz – remains true to form, with Grenache and Mataro from old vines at Ebenezer, Williamstown, Seppeltsfield and Tanunda, lifted by a splash of Shiraz from 20-year-old vines. Fragrant notes of red and dark berried fruits, cured meats and spice lead into a palate brimming with savoury, gamey flavour. We keep our Josh’ well away from oak and release it young to showcase the juicy, spicy, flavoursome Barossa redswe love to enjoy over lunch – best alongside a plate of thefinest Barossan smallgoods.”

Review of 2023:  94 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion An unoaked red blend of 56/37/7% grenache/mataro/shiraz that always hits the button for me, bringing back memories of trips to the Barossa and how I was drawn to this easy-drinking style in the early 2000s. Plums, mulberries, charcuterie, spice, dried citrus rind, pressed flowers, crushed stone and earth. Harmonious and savoury, it’s just lovely drinking.”

93 points, Aaron Brasher, The Real Review Kym Teusner has been crafting quintessential Barossa reds for a couple of decades now and this latest release of Joshua is bang on again. This wine hasn’t seen a lick of oak, just characterful grenache, mataro and shiraz from the Barossa sub-regions of Ebenezer, Williamstown, Seppeltsfield and Tanunda. Colour is youthful and bright in the glass. Aromas of blueberry, cherry, cedar, bramble, dried flowers and spice. There’s lovely lift and purity here. Vibrant and juicy in flavour, with lashings of fleshy blue fruits, sweet spice, nutty oak and a woodsy earthiness. The tannins are shapely, drying and firm and deliver structure and presence. A lovely wine.”
