This Sicilian estate just an hour southwest of Palermo source fruit from around the ancient town of Gibellina and of course on Mt. Etna. Tenute Orestiadi is a project born of the Orestiadi Foundation, based in Gibellina, and a local co-op Cantine Ermes.
Sicily is an island with a long tradition of winemaking and Molino a Vento (Tenute Orestiadi) in the hills at Gibellina is a well-known vineyard. They grow indigenous Sicilian varietals. Unique Terroir characterized by different soils, different microclimates and different altitudes create selections of native single vineyards of Tenute Orestiadi.
“Quite simply, the wines of Sicily have never been better than they are right now. The combination of drastically diverse terroirs, a huge uptick in quality and a vast number of varieties has created an embarrassment of riches for the discerning wine lover.” Eric Guido, Vinous Media.
Grown on a sandy red iron-rich soil ‘Pignatello’ which is used locally for pottery. The vineyards are between 100 and 300 metres above sea level. 100% Nerello Mascalese harvested by phenolic ripeness. Fermentation is conducted for 12-15 days at 24- 30°C with daily pump-overs. The wine is matured in stainless steel tanks and minimal oak contact to preserve fruit freshness. A vibrant and juicy expression, matured in steel tank and minimal oak contact to preserve the freshness .. think forrest fruits, cherries, cinnamon spice with crunchy acids that cry out for food!
“Tasting the young reds and whites from 2019s is a real treat. They are vibrant, sleek, fruit-filled yet focused, and anticipation of what the more important, later-released wines will bring to the table is very high. The weather cooled down through September and the first half of October, accompanied by timely precipitation, keeping harvest on track; and with a slight rise in temperatures and dry conditions at the end of October, even the late-harvested varieties reached peak ripeness.” Eric Guido, Vinous Media
