Description

After managing a B&B in the south of France, Martin and Vivienne Rawlinson were inspired to establish St John’s Road in 2001, with a vision to produce full flavoured, yet elegant, wines which reflect the essence of the Barossa.

Custodianship of St John’s Road now rests with Phil Lehmann, Jonathon Hesketh, Dale Wyman and a variety of Barossa wine growing families. Their aim is to uphold Martin and Vivien’s vision of producing wines that are not only true to the Barossa, but also the sub districts and vineyards they are grown in such as Ebenezer, Koonunga, Moppa, Maranaga, Greenock, Bethany, High Eden, Stockwell – all of which produce their own unique flavour profile …

From the winery:

“The Grenache vines of the Barossa Valley are some of the oldest in the world – having survived the vine pull scheme of the 1980s, as well as life almost permanently on the wrong side of fashion trends in wine. However, this versatile grape variety has endured to be the most widely planted in the world; partly because it’s used in everything from Rose to Fortified , but also because it’s a key component (often anonymously) in some of the world’s greatest wines.  We celebrate Grenache’s resurgence with our medium bodied, bright, fresh and fruit driven take on this incredibly resilient grape variety.

The 2017 vintage was noted as exceptional in the Barossa Valley due to favourable growing conditions the previous spring as well as a cooler summer period. This resulted in a late harvest and extended ripening period, producing a vibrant and aromatic style of Grenache without being overripe and confected.
Fruit for The Resilient was sourced from four vineyards located in the mid to northern Barossa Valley – the Schutz family vineyard in Stonewell 100 year old bush vines, the Hampel and Schiller sites in Ebenezer and Merv John’s acreage in Light Pass. Picking occurred between early March and mid April.
Following harvest, the Grenache grapes were crushed into 10T open-top fermenters with a portion of the fruit going through malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. After 8 days on skins the fruit was pressed and a portion was racked into second fill French Oak Hogsheads (300 L) for 6 months maturation.

Deep ruby with a purple tint and magenta rim. Vibrant, red fruits of raspberry with strawberry sorbet and hints of red licorice and spice. Hints of game and cherry cola. Juicy red fruits, raspberry coulis, blueberries and fresh acidity. Lovely soft tannins give smoothness and creaminess with some savoury notes of brioche and subtle spices. Cellaring 5-10 years.”

100 Best Australian Wines 2018/19 – Matthew Jukes – Jul 2018  “The Resilient, a wine which offers beguiling fruit, beautiful texture and a heavenly finish for a mere £15. Sourced from four vineyards located in the Barossa Valley – the Schutz family vineyard in Stonewell, the Hampel and Schiller sites in Ebenezer and Merv John’s property in Light Pass. The winemaking is extremely straightforward using open-top fermenters with a slice of fruit going through malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Old French hogsheads caress the fruit for 6 months and it is ready to go. The reason why this wine is so successful and memorable is the layering of the impeccable sources of fruit. The nose is tremendous with raspberry, rhubarb and red cherry tones in abundance. The palate is buoyant and racy and the finish is dry, raspy and keen. It is a brilliant wine.”

95 Points – The Adelaide Advertiser “The front label of this bottle features a gnarly old grenache bush vine in the Barossa’s Stonewell district, from a vineyard managed by Paul and Angie Schutz. They’re named proudly as the vine and fruit providers for this wine, which has a rustic appeal to it, but also the innocent pleasure of chewing on a raspberry licorice stick. There’s good fruit lift out of the glass and a tight little fist of sandy tannins in the finish. And it’s also pretty bloody good tasting as you sip your way further into the bottle. No wonder it won best grenache and best red and this year’s Barossa regional wine comp.”

93 points, James Halliday’s 2019 Australian Wine Companion “Everything points here to it having been a very good vintage. This is effortless, jubey, juicy and delicious, a sound tether of tannin then tying it all neatly together. Pitch perfect in other words. Excellent value.”

92 points, The Wine Front ” It’s a lovely grenache. It has a swing to it. Raspberry and redcurrant with flashes of anise and dry, sweet spice. A little jubey perhaps. Succulent too. You just want to drink it, and drink it. Very nicely priced it is too.”

5 Starts, Rob Geddes MW “Very inviting on the nose – cherry, raspberry and a touch of smoky oak. The wine has an attractive vibrancy to it. It’s a jumble of juicy red fruits, fine but firm tannins and fresh acidity. Excellent summer drinking, especially slightly chilled. I give this gorgeous Grenache a sold 5 stars!”
