Description
Remelluri is a breathtakingly beautiful place nestled under the Sierra Cantabria mountain range above 600 m altitude. The estate is located east of Labistida 15 mins drive east of Haro on the way to San Vincente. Steeped in history the story dates back to the 10th century, when Condé Aláves Erramel and his ‘Erramelluri’ farm took shape. It grew during the 14th century when monks made the first wine here.
Jaime Rodriguez Salis and Amaya Hernandorena acquired the estate in 1967, reuniting the lands that had been broken up over time. Here the scenic slopes of Sierra de Toloño stand over the valleys of Valderemelluri, La Granja and Villaescusa. These south-facing vineyards are shielded from frost and winds by the mountains, having a different microclimate from most of Rioja Alta and Alavesa.
Rodriguez and son Telmo, one of Spain’s greatest viticulturists, have restored Remelluri to 105 hectares under vine. Telmo Rodriguez brought great changes to this historic estate by introducing biodynamic farming as well as working with the surrounding growers to formulate the Lindes (‘borders’) de Remelluri concept. The concept explores the differences between the villages of Labastida and San Vicente by vinifying these separately to express their special personalities. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and a touch Viura and Malvasía Riojana. The 2015 was an exceptional growing season has delivered a treat here a marvelous wine of depth of fruit, balance and elegance. (14% alc). Top tier of Spain’s vintages along with most likely 2021 and 2001.
94 points, Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate” The estate red 2015 Reserva was produced with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano from their 86 hectares of vineyards. It’s from an early harvest after a warm and dry year that achieved perfect ripeness with some rain at the end of the cycle. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats and matured in barrel for 21 months. It combines youth with development, power with elegance and comes through as clean and defined, with a medium to full-bodied palate, focused flavors and a dry but lively finish.”
94 points James Suckling: “Ripe and beautiful with ripe berries, hazelnuts and spice. Some crushed stone, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and focused. Generous and racy. Goes on for minutes.” August 2021
94 points Tim Atkin: “Tempranillo provides the core for this estate blend, surrounded by 30% Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo and Granegro. Made with fruit from three valleys – Remelluri, Valderremelluri and Villaescusa – ranging between 590 and 805 metres, it’s floral, elegant and savoury, with red berry, forest floor and tobacco notes and fine-boned tannins.”
