“Little would we know that when Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine from his father in 1973, he was on the road to becoming a legend. Following the example of traditionalist Jules Chauvet, Marcel and three other local vignerons Jean Foillard, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton, soon hoisted the flag of Chauvet’s back-to-nature movement. Kermit dubbed this clan the Gang of Four, and the name has stuck ever since. The Gang called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification. Sadly, the 2010 vintage was Marcel’s last. His children, Mathieu and Camille continue the great work that their father pioneered, introducing biodynamic vineyard practices and ensuring that Marcel’s legacy lives on.” Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant
“M & C Lapierre is one of the most storied estates in Beaujolais. Matthieu and Camille Lapierre are consistently producing wines at an extremely high level of quality, among the best in the region. .. Demand for the Lapierre wines keeps on a steady ascent, given that this is an iconic estate, in one of the best crus of a historically renowned region, and the quality of the wines is at an extremely high level.” Josh Reynolds, Vinous Media, Aug 2021.
Top shelf Cru Beaujolais from one of France’s great growers.
94 points, James Suckling “Deep nose of spices, licorice and dried cherries with a pronounced flinty note. Cool and sleek but with impressive concentration for the 2021 vintage, this already has wonderful harmony right through the long, structured and stony finish. Bottled with low sulfur addition and unfiltered. Drink or hold.”
93 points Vinous Media, Neal Martin, May 2023 ” The 2021 Morgon Non-Sulphité has a beautifully-defined bouquet with vivacious red berry fruit, hints of black olive and oyster shell – very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Cool and linear, sophisticated in style with a saline finish. This Morgon looks the challenges of the growing season in the eye and overcomes everything thrown at it. Magnificent.”
