“One of Piedmont’s superstars… these are wines of extraordinary complexity and breathtaking richness. The spectacular offerings from Pira ’s vineyards in and around Serralunga d’Alba are among the more riveting examples.” – Robert Parker
Giampaolo Pira took over from his father Luigi and developed from grower to producer with their first Barolo in 1993. This first wine, and those for a few years after, saw the Pira style very much in the ‘modernist’ camp, with relatively short macerations in the ‘elephant’ version of the newfangled roto-fermenters, followed by time in new small French oak.
It was these powerful, dark, oaky yet still distinctively Serralunga wines, which were encouraged as the way ahead, by the likes of Parker and Marc de Grazia. Fast forward, and like some producers (not all) Pira has significantly modified this regime so the terroir of Serralunga can shine by using more traditional gentle maceration techniques and use of traditional large oak including for his Three Star crus of Serralunga, ‘Margheria’, ‘Marenca’ and it is only the great ‘Vigna Rionda’ that is matured in small French oak casks.
This fine Barolo comprises a blend of fruit from the 3 famous crus of Serralunga village: Margheria (for floral characters) , Marenca ( for power) , and the great Vigna Rionda ( for intensity, austerity) owned by the Pira family.
In 2014 due to the challenging nature of the vintage, Giampaolo Pira only made the Serralunga Barolo (none of the single vineyard Crus were released) which comprised the crème of the crop of Vigna Rionda, Marenca and Margheria which no doubt bolstered the depth and power of the wine. More mid weight elegance to the power and density of Serralunga fruit.. Beautiful Barolo on offer here… An absolute treat not to be missed!
92 pts Antonio Galloni Vinous Media ‘’The 2014 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is the only wine Giampaolo Pira made in 2014, and is a blend of all the best fruit from the Marenca, Margheria and Collina Rionda vineyards. Powerful and dense in the glass, but in the mid-weight style of the year, Pira’s 2014 has a lot to offer. There is plenty of the depth and power readers have come to expect from Pira’s wines, but naturally tempered by the personality of the year. Iron, smoke, cedar, savory herbs, tobacco and cured meats add to the wine’s brooding, virile personality.’’
