Description
Longhop is a winemaking venture between 2 high school friends, Tim Freeland and Dominic Torzi (of leading Eden Valley winery, Torzi Matthews) and these guys continue to shake things up as far as the quality to price wine ratio goes…this wine (sourced from 3 Adelaide Plains vineyards) is extraordinary for the price.
The former Gawler high school mates seized upon an idea in 2002 of salvaging some of the last remaining old vine vineyards in the Adelaide Plains and making icon wines from that region. Vineyards were secured, old vines a priority. Their small band of growers have since embraced the ideal of delivering premium grapes in order to showcase the power and rich fruit flavours the Adelaide Plains and adjoining Mt Lofty Ranges has to offer. The wines are made with minimal intervention. Open fermented and basket pressed. No fining or filtration is used prior to bottling.
Fruit from Gawler River and Angle Vale (Spanish & French clones) 50+ year old vines, work seamlessly bringing dark cherries, raspberry, plum and dried herb. Impressive depth from the medium bodied wine, finishing with gentle tannin and supple spice.
Cold soak prior to whole berry & partial whole bunch ferment in five ton open top fermenters, soft pump overs and minimal hand plunging. On skins for six days, basket pressed into young seasoned oak with ferment finishing off in barrel. Matured in French oak, two rackings prior to bottling.
From the winemaker about this release “Vintage after vintage our old vine grenache simply delivers. Two great old vineyards offer up the fruit, one along the Gawler River the other near suburban, two different clones, Spanish and French mixing it up against the more fancied Barossa and McLaren neighbours. Grenache lovers unite!
92 points, Tony Love, Halliday Wine Companion “Old-school grenache character with whole berries and part whole bunch, minimal plunging, on skins for just 6 days and finishing ferments in barrel. It’s light and bright crimson in the glass, lifted with cherry fruit and garden herbs in its airs and palate. Medium bodied, simple, gluggable grenache.”
92 points, Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front “Boy. Gosh. This is vivid. And plush. And exuberant. And about as delicious as they come. It has polish, it has raspberry and sweet spice flavours aplenty, and it’s juicy. It’s the kind of wine that will evoke a myriad of flavour descriptors but the net effect will be the same: it’s a wine of gorgeous drinkability. No hesitation.”
