Description
“A maniacal attention to detail in both the vineyards and cellar sets Fontodi apart as one of Italy’s most inspired producers.” Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Fontodi Estate is one of the most highly regarded Chianti classico producers and is located in Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Owner Giovanni Manetti (whose family purchased the estate in 1968) has 70 hectares of biodynamic vines referred to as Conca-D’oro “golden shell” for its heat-trapping amphitheatre shape perfect for ripening grapes. 2008 was the first vintage to be certified organic although organic vineyard practices go back to 1990. Free draining soils called ‘galestro” (schist rock with marl and clay) suits sangiovese perfectly. Meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and winery sets this estate apart!
This fine chianti classico is the estate’s main wine – 100% Sangiovese (up to 20% of other varieties is permitted in the blend however they are purists), wild yeasts, meticulous fruit selection followed by at least 18 months in old French oak.
Relish the beguiling delicacy and complexity of aroma (black raspberry, cherry, chargrilled meat, leather) despite the power and thrust of this medium to full bodied vino italiano. This fine vino rosso cries out for roast meat. Salute!
This pure expression of Sangiovese sees 2 years in neutral wood and bottle before release.
17++ points, Jancis Robinson “Youthful ruby. Subtle yet enticing nose of sweet red fruit with meaty notes and hints of laurel. Lots of juice on the palate and plenty of grainy but ripe tannins; but they are in perfect harmony with the succulent fruit.” Drinking Window: 2023-2032
93 points, Decanter Magazine “This flagship Chianti Classico from the renowned Fontodi estate has grown over the years to its current annual production of 170,000 bottles, however it has not lost its identity, deeply rooted in a sun-drenched stretch of Panzano’s Conca d’Oro. The 2020 version has all the ripe dark fruit and assertive tannins that come so neatly into balance. Grilled meat, baked earth and thyme flirt with black plum. The youthful juiciness has the energy to carry this over the next eight or so years. It finishes with its signature bitter liquorice twist.”
94 points, James Suckling “Subtle aromas of sliced strawberries and cherries with some orange peel follow through to a medium body with juicy tannins and a bright and tangy finish. This wine has wonderful energy. So good now.”
