Description
“A maniacal attention to detail in both the vineyards and cellar sets Fontodi apart as one of Italy’s most inspired producers.” Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Fontodi Estate is one of the most highly regarded Chianti classico producers and is located in Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Owner Giovanni Manetti (whose family purchased the estate in 1968) has 70 hectares of biodynamic vines referred to as Conca-D’oro “golden shell” for its heat-trapping amphitheatre shape perfect for ripening grapes. 2008 was the first vintage to be certified organic although organic vineyard practices go back to 1990. Free draining soils called ‘galestro” (schist rock with marl and clay) suits sangiovese perfectly. Meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and winery sets this estate apart!
This fine chianti classico is the estate’s main wine – 100% Sangiovese (up to 20% of other varieties is permitted in the blend however they are purists), wild yeasts, meticulous fruit selection followed by 12 months in old French oak. 2010 was a dream growing season in Tuscany, some heralding at as one of the all time greats! … ‘Giovanni Manetti’s 2010s will one day be regarded as some of his greatest wines. From top to bottom, the Fontodi 2010s are superb….’ Antonio Galloni, August 2012
Relish the beguiling delicacy and complexity of aroma (black raspberry, cherry, chargrilled meat, leather) despite the power and thrust of this medium to full bodied vino italiano. Recommend decanting. This fine vino rosso cries out for roast meat. Salute!
93 points Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media “..boasts striking inner perfume, but is otherswise very shut down. Today, the 2010 seems to combine the finesse of the 2004 with some of the structure of the 2006. Clean veins of 2010 acidity support the brilliant, sensual finish. The 2010 is a gorgeous wine with a bright future, although readers will need to be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.’
Matthew Jukes, October 2014 … “This 2010 vintage is the finest I can remember in 25 years of following this estate and I urge you to buy it because I tasted the 2011 the other day .. and it is not a patch on my featured vintage. This is model Chianti – regal, layered, brooding and composed. The aroma alone transports me to the vineyards in a moment. This wine has a decade ahead of it but you must secure your stock today. It is the finest £20 Tuscan red on the shelves this season.”
