Description
Chatillon is Ed Peter‘s (owner of Australia’s Yarra Yering) project in the French Alps. Vines up to 40 years of age grown in Chautagne area of Savoie close to Lac de Bourget which used to be called “Chatillon” south east of Annecy in the French Alps. The label depicts the castle Chateau de Chatillon that goes back to 1125 (has been refurbished into a residence) situated on the property.
The Chautagne area of Savoie enjoys warmer daytime climate (with alpine cold nights) and the only area in Savoie where red wines are dominant with Gamay comprising 50% of production (with Mondeuse & Pinot Noir the remainder).
Organic viticultural practices (uncertified), 100% estate grown fruit, handpicking and hands off winemaking practices in the winery: wild yeasts, some solids in ferments. No oak maturation.
This is a super tasty medium weight red – 100% Gamay. Lifted aromatics red and black fruits, more-ish savoury character and pristine alpine purity. Reminds me of sangiovese meets pinot noir/cru beaujolais with alpine freshness. Very rare to see Savoie wines outside the region.
Treat yourself to a taste of the French Alps with this delightful ‘rouge’… Absolute winner for quality and value. 13% Alc. Under diam cork. Vive les montagnes!
90 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review “A light-bodied red in a savoury style, smelling of forest floor, dried herbs and dried flowers, with a cherry bonbon background. Gentle texture, very light tannins, easy drinking.”
