Description
A new addition for the Feraud family since 2012, this 60 ha property is located just 6 kms south of the town of Chateauneuf-du-Pape to the west of the town of Sorgues. There are 41 ha of well established vines planted on land quite similar to that found in Chateauneuf-du-Pape with most of the vineyards being classified as Cotes du Rhone Villages (these are just 1-2 kms from the southern most border of Chateauneuf-du-Pape) and a smaller area as Cotes du Rhone as well as some vineyards without classification. As is found in Chateauneuf-du-Pape the predominant variety here is Grenache with smaller plantings of Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault and numerous other Rhone varieties. The vineyards are farmed in exactly the same way as for their Chateauneuf with strict pruning, green harvest to reduce yields and hand picking at harvest time and strict selection.
For winemaking the grapes are sorted carefully and pressed and soaked for 10 days with no added yeast and no de-stemming and no temperature control. The ageing for Chateau Pegau wines is done all in tank with no oak used. The aim being to preserve the freshness and perfume. There are just 5 wines made at this estate, most being Cotes du Rhone Villages rouge with smaller quantities of Cotes du Rhone rouge and blanc and rose. This is an outstanding addition to the Pegau family of wines showing the generosity of southern Rhone Grenache blends. Enjoy this robust expression of Cotes du Rhone!
‘(60% grenache, 20% syrah and 20% mourvedre): Bright violet color. Mineral-tinged scents of candied dark berries, floral pastilles and smoky Indian spices. Black raspberry and cherry flavors firm up with air, showing good depth and energy. Finishes on a tangy note, with lingering spiciness and gripping, slowly building tannins.’ 89 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous, April 2014.
“Aged in enamel tanks… fresh and focused, with medium-bodied richness, loads of cracked pepper, black fruits and herb aromas and flavours, and chewy tannin on the finish. It too has outstanding potential and should have upward of a decade of longevity.” 88-90 points, The Wine Advocate #209, Robert Parker.
