Description
Chateau de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. It was completed in 1676. The project was financed by Louis XIV’s personal chaplain, Francois de la Chaise, “and his grateful nephew, the original owner, named the chateau for his munificent uncle.” The architect was Jules Hardouin-Mansart, and Andre Le Notre designed the gardens. It has been listed as an official historical monument since 1972. Cared for by the same family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti-and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.
“Morgon” is a blend of a selection of vineyard sites located in the Morgon appellation, on deep very altered granites and ancient alluvials of 40 years (average) vines.
From the winemaker: “100% Gamay. 42 year old vines, organic, harvested by hand. 50% whole bunch. Matured in 50% oak vats & 50% in concrete vats for 8 months.
Passion red, garnet reflections. The nose of this wine offers a graphical note, and as a first impression, it reveals notes of flint stone, as well as spicy and smoky accents. Finally, aromas of tree nuts come to complete the ensemble, with hints of hazelnuts, almonds, or walnuts. In the mouth, this wine stands out with well-structured tannins that bring a sensation of firmness and presence. The presence of smoke remains subtle, followed by flavors of dark chocolate that provide richness and complexity.” Under Cork. 13% Alc
94 Points, Stuart Piggott, jamessuckling.com “Stunning nose of sour cherries and black raspberries with hints of forest floor and pomegranate. A very impressive Morgon in which power, freshness and elegance are effortlessly married. Wonderful texture on the concentrated and polished palate. Very long and polished finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”
