Description
Chateau de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. It was completed in 1676. The project was financed by Louis XIV’s personal chaplain, Francois de la Chaise, “and his grateful nephew, the original owner, named the chateau for his munificent uncle.” The architect was Jules Hardouin-Mansart, and Andre Le Notre designed the gardens. It has been listed as an official historical monument since 1972. Cared for by the same family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti-and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.
From the winemaker: “Crafted from a selection of vineyard parcels located in the heart of the Fleurie appellation, it perfectly captures the essence of its granitic terroir, renowned for imparting exceptional elegance and floral complexity.”
“Each plot is vinified separately. Fermentation in stainless steel, accompanied by semi-carbonic maceration. 10% whole cluster fermentation. Aged for eight months in large oak foudres. Organically grown.
“A hot and dry summer in 2022 led to reduced yields, but the concentrated fruit from the arid conditions resulted in fantastically rich and flavourful wines.”
93 Points, James Suckling “An elegant and fragrant Fleurie that has the light-footed character and floral delicacy we associate with this appellation. The wine’s structure is very discreet, completely beneath the surface on the front palate, then slowly emerging in the long, precise finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.” Under Cork.
