Description
Chateau de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. It was completed in 1676. The project was financed by Louis XIV’s personal chaplain, Francois de la Chaise, “and his grateful nephew, the original owner, named the chateau for his munificent uncle.” The architect was Jules Hardouin-Mansart, and Andre Le Notre designed the gardens. It has been listed as an official historical monument since 1972. Cared for by the same family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti-and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.
About this wine: A pretty deep ruby color. The nose is defined by very ripe fruit where black cherry combines with the peppery notes of gamay and the graphite dimension of granite. The register is accomplished, underlined by a woodiness which delicately patinates. The palate displays quality substance with diffuse power. The tannic support is delicate, the fine woodiness structures the finish. The whole is full, fleshy, while retaining the feeling of balance. It is a full-bodied wine capable of aging well.
96 points, James Suckling “Needs a moment in the glass for the forest-berry aromas to open up. Very minerally and smoky with plenty of forest-floor character. Stunning concentration and great elegance right through the extremely long and finely etched finish. Difficult to pull yourself away from this remarkable Brouilly. That this is only medium-bodied actually increases its appeal. Just a hint of blood oranges in the finish magnifies its freshness. From organically grown grapes.” March 2024
