Description
Chateau de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. It was completed in 1676. The project was financed by Louis XIV’s personal chaplain, Francois de la Chaise, “and his grateful nephew, the original owner, named the chateau for his munificent uncle.” The architect was Jules Hardouin-Mansart, and Andre Le Notre designed the gardens. It has been listed as an official historical monument since 1972. Cared for by the same family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti-and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.
About this wine: Gamay Noir. Pale to medium ruby. Aromas of wild cherry and redcurrant with a faint violet lift; a touch of white pepper and crushed stone. The palate is sleek and sapid (more glide than grip) with fine-boned tannins and threaded acidity giving line and energy. No overt oak; texture is delicately extracted, cool and pure. Finishes clean, with a mineral snap and gentle spice. Benchmark, drink-now Bourgogne Gamay Noir that rewards a light chill.
