Description
Villa Argiano lay claim to being the oldest wine estate in Montalcino, located below Saint’Angelo in Colle, some 8km from the famous wine town. Built in 1581 the Villa passed through many sets of hands over the centuries and in 1992, the current owner Noemi Marone Cinzano purchased the property. In the past the renown consultant, Giacomo Tachis, the man behind Sassacaia, was involved in the project and the Bordeaux varieties were planted but today Bordeaux-trained winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers holds the reins. The estates range of wines is superb and includes Suolo, their silky Sangiovese and stunning Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.
Brunello is the soul, the identity of Argiano: elegance, finesse and, at the same time, structure and long aging.
This Brunello di Montalcino is made entirely with Sangiovese from vineyards planted- on marl, clay and limestone at a relatively high altitude between 280 to 310 metres above sea level. The vines are, on average, sixty years of age. The juice goes through cold soaking, is fermented in tanks with its indigenous yeasts and then matured in Slovenian oak barrels of various sizes for up to 30 months.
About the 2019 vintage from the winemaker: “Normal winter with a small snowfall in March. Spring with infrequent but considerable rainfall; very low temperatures but no risk of frost. A hot first part of summer, balanced by significant rainfall later on that provided the necessary water resources. Stable September with an optimal end of ripening. In general, an interesting and balanced vintage.
“Fresh, complex, and fruity nose with balsamic and fleshy final notes. In the mouth it is very vertical, with distinctive but silky and well-blended tannins and a marked flavor that makes it very gastronomic.” 14.5% alc
95 Points; James Suckling“Delightful aromas of juicy red cherries, strawberries, rose petals and wild bush, together with hints of juniper and ground herbs. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and crisp acidity. Zesty and piquant with beautiful balance and finish. Plenty of fruit at the end. Give it more time to come around. Try after 2027.”
95 points, Wine Spectator “This is packed with ripe cherry, plum and raspberry fruit, with floral, mineral, juniper and wild herb accents adding depth and complexity. There’s plenty of energy and structure as well, providing excellent balance, with a long aftertaste. “
94 points, Jeb Dunnuck “Taking a dark ruby hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino offers a warming bouquet of black raspberry, licorice candies, polished leather, and sappy forest herbs. Rounded and approachable, it’s medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannins and balanced acidity, ripe concentration throughout, and a long finish with a note of bergamot. This is a beautifully styled wine from the Argiano team, who continue to impress. “
94 Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate “The Argiano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino comes out stronger than the previous 2018 and 2017 vintages, thanks to the precision and focus of its fruit flavors in this balanced vintage. It shows ample depth and volume, with sweet cherry and blackberry that fold into softly toasted spice and earth. Floral hints of lilac and iris make brief but poignant appearances. Velvety tannins and a nicely concentrated mid-weight palate give good staying power.”
