Description
Trediberri translates in italiano as the three from Berri (a little hamlet of La Morra, the highest town in Barolo and renowned for wines of elegance and refinement).
Father and son team Frederico & Nicola Oberto and friend Vladimiro Rambaldi (a banker) make up the trio and back in 2008 they purchased 5ha of Berri vineyards in La Morra. Anna Rosa Oberto (wife/mother) is also hands on pruning vines fastidiously when not working at the post office. The Oberto family also have 2ha of one of premium Barolo cru: Rocche dell’Annunziata. Their new winery in the village of Torriglione overlooks the vineyard.
Nic Oberto oversees the winemaking at Trediberri with his father Federico (following his retirement from Renato Ratti after several decades) and Enologist Livio Taretto, and Nic’s fiancée Stefania Drocco, plays an increasingly important role in the overall Trediberri story. Since 2012 Trediberri winery has been certified by CCPB srl, Bologna as in conversion to organic.
From the winery: “Our Barolo “classic” has been a blend of different vineyards until 2017 and it has always tried to represent the typical character of La Morra, in particular its drinkability and its finesse. This wine has never been extremely alcoholic or full-bodied, rather more characterized by a “weightless” power and freshness. Henceforth it doesn’t need a long time in the bottle to be joyfully consumed.”
Andrew Jefford named Trediberri amongst his “Five Outstanding Barolo & Barbaresco Producers for Value” August ’15
About the 2019 vintage … Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2023 ‘2019 Barolo – Back on Track’ These are the finest wines I have tasted from Nicolà and Stefania Oberto. The 2019s are marked by a gorgeous feeling of transparency that has at times been elusive. Gentler winemaking and an increasing reliance on large-format oak are among the choices that inform these Barolos today. With young estates, quality is often driven more by work and progress over time rather than by the conditions of any given vintage. That is very much the case here. Readers will note the straight Barolo is now labelled Berri, the result of the winery losing its lease in Capalot and the devastating frost that wiped out virtually the entire crop at Torriglione.”
Has the goods although tightly coiled.. tasted on day 2 the layers unfurled to reveal the joys of what is to come. One for the cellar alternatively recommend decanting.
93 points, Antonio Galloni “The 2019 Barolo Berri is tightly wound and austere in the early going. Crushed red berry fruit, iron, dried herbs and white pepper give the Berri a striking aromatic top register. The tannins are a bit nervy, though, so a few years in bottle are warranted. Frost decimated the crop at Torriglione, which is why this wine (typically the Barolo del Comune di La Morra) is Berri in 2019. To be exact there is 4% Torriglione, as that was the wine used for topping.”
