The Zema family planted their 61 hectare vineyard in 1982 on the Coonawarra terra rossa strip. 100% estate grown fruit (very low yields) ensures wines of exceptional depth of flavour true to the Coonawarra terroir. If ever there is an example of great wines being made in the vineyard, Zema is it! This highly regarded and awarded producer was not only given the elusive 5 star winery rating by Halliday but also best of the region. Their reds are all cellarworthy. 2010 was an excellent vintage.
94 Points James Halliday “…a very well made wine from Zema Estate; the elegant, medium-bodied palate has a classic Coonawarra cabernet sense of place, with fresh and lively plum, mulberry and cherry fruit, backed by perfectly balanced and integrated oak and tannins.”
92 points Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front “..Straight up it tastes good but with air it builds structure and character. You’re unlikely to walk away disappointed from a bottle of this. Strong eucalypt and blackcurrant, dusty herbs, modest (and well integrated) spicy oak and a gravelly, gently tannic finish. Medium-bodied, clean and varietal. As they say in the classics: for now or for later.”
4.5/5 Stars, Tony Love, National Wine Writer, Taste.com “There’s a traditional honesty about this wine, a regional and varietal double act that works a treat, allowing it to delight in its blackcurrant and dark berry purity, owing as much to a brilliant vintage as it does to its genuine custodianship and understanding that here less is more. Subtle mocha end notes are a perfect finish.”
