Description
In Dreams is located in Healesville in the heart of the picturesque Yarra Valley, set among 42 acres of gently sloping, predominantly north-west facing vines. It is a space perfect for small-batch, quality winemaking, complete with a selection of small open top fermentation vessels and a barrel hall for wine maturation. “Our grapes come from the cool-climate vineyards of the Upper Yarra for their minerality and vibrancy, with smaller parcels from the slightly warmer vineyards on the valley floor for their plush, fruity character. For us, it’s all about balance and purity of fruit.”
Anthony Fikkers belongs to a new generation of winemakers whobelieve a hands-off approach from vineyard to bottle results inwines brimming with personality and authenticity. This philosophy allows the fruit to shine, and the resulting wines are unadulterated, expressive reflections of time and place. Anthony started his vinous career in the Hunter Valley before moving to the Yarra to pursue his passion for cool-climate winemaking, in particular Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Over the last sixteen years, Anthony has worked for a swag of prominent wineries including Giant Steps, Mac Forbes and Medhurst, as well as working vintagesin Burgundy, Piedmont and Baden.
About this wine from the winery: “The fruit for In Dreams Pinot Noir is selected from vineyards spanning from the cool, high-altitude vineyards of Seville in the Upper Yarra and St Andrews in the far north-west of the region, complimented by fruit from Coldstream and Dixons Creek on the Valley floor. Altitudes vary from 130mabove sea level to 240m and soil types include both red volcanic loams and grey clay loams overlying mudstone. Clonal components of Abel, MV6, 114 and 115 are the building blocks of our In Dreams Pinot Noir.”
“Mainly whole berry ferment with around 10% whole bunches included for a little extra aromatic lift. On average, each batch spent around 10 days on skins with just one pump over per day to wet the cap without over-extracting. Pressed into French oak (10% new) for 10 months maturation.”
“The 2023 vintage was a cool and wet growing season in the Yarra Valley, producing small crops of well-balanced fruit. The season started two weeks later than usual allowing the development of lovely fruit characters and good concentration. The 2023 In Dreams Pinot has all the hallmarks of classic Upper Yarra Pinot – lifted red berry fruit, a touch of spice and silky tannins.
“From a selection of vineyards spanning the Yarra Valley but focusing on the township of Seville East in the Upper Yarra Valley. Other vineyard sources are located in Coldstream and Yarra Glen. Altitudes vary from 130m above sea level to 240m and soil types include both red volcanic loams and grey clay loams overlying mudstone.
“Most of the fruit for In Dreams is destemmed with only a small proportion (5%) going into the fermenter as whole bunches. The mainly whole berries are fermented in open top fermenters for an average of 12 days. Pressed off to French oak (15% new) for maturation. Assembled and bottled in December 2023.
96 Points & Special Value Star; Philip Rich James Halliday Wine Companion “Bright ruby red in colour, with aromas of sweet, spiced cherries, raspberries, and allspice. The palate shows more cherry, raspberry, and a brambly, wild fruit character. Vibrant acidity carries the wine through the palate, with ripe, spicy, fine-grained tannins finely weaving their way through, giving the wine good structure and energy, and leaves you wanting more!”
A blend focusing on the township of Seville East in the Upper Yarra Valley but also incorporating fruit from Coldstream and Yarra Glen. A small percentage of whole bunches. A bright, ruby red. An aromatic bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and a little briar. Just as good on the medium-bodied, crunchy-fruited and energetic palate. Pliant tannins round out a wine that will still be drinking well a decade from now. Date: Sept 2024; Alcohol: 13%; Drink by: 2033
93 points, Brendan Black, Wine Pilot “Like the Chardonnay, fruit is sourced from around the valley and is a mix of clones. Its bouquet is distinct as soon as you open the bottle, with some ripe confectionery notes which fall away to reveal a pretty and refined base of fruit. Black and red cherry mix with strawberry and raspberry, with the flowery goodness of violets and a touch of stemmy savouriness appearing after some air. On the palate, there is pronounced fruit sweetness, giving the wine much vitality, with some tongue-tingling minerality adding some more depth. Another very enjoyable wine from winemaker Anthony Fikkers.” Limited Last stocks
