david hook gorge shiraz 06 top review under 20

We’ve always thought this wine was consistently good, so it’s not surprising to see David Hook’s  “The Gorge” Shiraz 06 get such great reviews from our top wine writers.     It’s getting harder to find top quality under 20 bucks these days but here at The Vine Press we’ve always said this wine was one of them and its good to see we are not alone in our thinking…. Check this out:

Campbell Mattinson author of “The Big Red Wine Book”   says  the David Hook “The Gorge” Shiraz 06   is in the Top 100 Red Wines at $20 or less…… He says: “The fact that wines like this are starting to sell well is a sign that Australian wine is growing up: as a wine drinking nation, we’ve increasingly come to appreciate a broad range of styles. This is a very sensible wine. Its alcohol is moderate, its flavours are enough without being too much, there’s a good dose of spirit-of-the-land earthiness about it and it’s both savoury and fruity through the finish. I reckon you’d please a lot of people by serving this: it’s like a good quality bottle of Chianti, or a slightly stronger, earthier version of pinot noir. Drink 2008-2016

And Huon Hooke says: “David Hook’s The Gorge Shiraz 2006 costs $18 but in my book is at least $25 worth of deliciousness. Dark inky purple, it has a black olive, aniseed, plum and dark-berry nose and a depth of cherry-plum, fruit-driven flavour that weights in at just 13.5 percent and gives a great deal of pleasure. It’s balanced and very drinkable at this tender age and will surely drink well for at least 10 more years”. Wow – check out our  Reds page to see our competitive price on this great Shiraz.
