curly flat from macedon ranges is chardonnay and pinot noir superstar

Curly Flat – “Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Superstar of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges” – James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010

Tasting Curly Flat’s extraordinary pinot noir and chardonnay releases gave me great excitement! Their success is due to Phillip & Jeni Moraghan’s fanatical attention to the vineyard…they planted the vineyard in Romsey /Lancefield ( 80 kms north of Melbourne) in Victoria’s Mount Macedon Ranges back in 1991. Their site with its elevation of 560 metres and location south of the Great Dividing Range makes it the coolest grape growing region in mainland Australia and perfectly suited to chardonnay and pinot noir.

Phillip pays tribute to the vineyard (producing innately high natural acidity) and is a big believer in not only terroir but the importance of the ‘hand of man” in looking after the vineyard – hence he employs biodynamic practices (no herbicides and only natural fertilizers) in the vineyard. 100% estate grown fruit, predominantly wild yeasts. All this work in the vineyard reaps great rewards.  Rhys Connery.
