Ashton Hills Galah Galah Sparkling Shiraz 2002 was awarded best vintage sparkling wine in the first issue of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide 2011, by Nick Stock. This is what Nick had to say:
‘A niche style that’s uniquely Australian; I (and a dedicated band of enthusiasts) sincerely hope it’s one we’ll see more of at the top end. With old-vine material from the Clare Valley, it’s complex, uniquely expressive, deeply profound and worthy of further age and only the finest company. Drink until 2016. This is made from a sacred patch of Clare Valley vineyards – some vines here date back to the 19th century – and they’ve delivered a stunning shiraz nose, with deep dark-fruit aromas, dark spice and liquorice in essence-like concentration. The palate has unthinkably rich flavours: tar and black fruits, some dark plums and an abundance of fine spice. Tannins stretch long and true – really striking and still very young. This is a wine to relish from the cellar for some years to come.’
