Description

For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo.  The overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations.

For some years now, as Vietti have extended their Scarrone vineyard plantings, on the slope immediately below the Vietti Cantina in Castiglione Falletto, they have been producing two Barbera d’Alba wines. The Barbera d’Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia is, as its name suggests, from the older vines, average 80 years of age. The newer plantings (between 10 and 60 years of age), go into the Barbera d’Alba Scarrone followed by 14 mths in cask old Slovenian. Gorgeous wine… need a little time and plenty of air if drinking now

“The 2011 Barbera d’Alba Scarrone is drop- dead gorgeous. Powerful, rich and intense, the 2011 flows across the palate with layers of dark, mineral-infused fruit. Smoke, tar and licorice all flesh out in a Barbera that impresses for its pure drive and pedigree The 2011 Scarrone brings together the fabulous depth and opulence of the year, but with a marvelous sense of restraint. This is a terrific showing from Vietti. 2015- 2026. 92+ “ Antonio Galloni of Vinous (reviewed oct 2013).

On the 2011 vintage in Piedmont, Antonio Galloni of Vinous said “For Barbera, the vintage was very positive, thanks to the heat at the end of August and September, there was a reduction in the variety’s typical acidity, while the sugar content increased only slightly resulting in wines of exceptional structure and balance.”    Luca from Vietti commented that 2011 was an even better growing season for Barbera than 2010, for nebbiolo the opposite.     2011 Scarrone Barbera is amazing -it’s more structured, concentrated wine than the 2010 and will live longer.
