9th generation winemaker and native of Bordeaux, Dominique Portet is regarded as a pioneer of the renaissance of the Victorian Wine industry since 1976 when he founded renowned sparkling wine house Taltarni in the Pyrenees of Victoria and Clover Hill in Tasmania. In 2000 he embarked on his greatest adventure: the Dominique Portet winery in the Yarra Valley. Son, Ben Portet, and generation 10, is now at the winemaking helm and, like many Australian-born winemakers, spent time overseas to experience other terroirs, including vintages at Louis Roederer and Warwick Estate in South Africa.
About this wine: The Upper Yarra remains the source of this Brut Rosé NV, a sub-region celebrated for its altitude, cool nights and long, even ripening season. Grown at 250 metres on 25-year-old vines, the fruit develops with clarity and finesse. These conditions are ideal for sparkling wine, giving purity, tension and finely etched flavour. Pinot Noir from these slopes brings perfume, structure and red-fruited depth, while Chardonnay contributes line, elegance and mineral drive. Together they shape a style that is vibrant yet refined, guided by a French sensibility that values precision and balance above all.
This release is anchored by the 2022 vintage, a season defined by mild and low yielding conditions and a long, slow ripening period that produced fruit of beautiful balance and natural acidity. To this, 20% reserve wines reaching back to 2014 were blended in, adding subtle complexity and maturity. The blend is 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, handpicked and crafted in the traditional method. After secondary fermentation in bottle, the wine spent a minimum of 24 months resting on lees in our cool cellars before disgorgement and a gentle dosage.
A delicate pale salmon hue, radiant and fine. Aromas of wild strawberry, rose petal and citrus zest are layered with hints of pastry and spice. The palate is lively and elegant, with red berry fruit carried by bright acidity and a silky mousse. A long, soft finish reflects both the freshness of 2022 and the quiet complexity drawn from the reserve wines.
