Description

Egly Ouriet has been awarded 3 stars, the highest rating, in Le Classement by La Revue du Vin de France.  Le Classement is a ranking of the 1300 best domaines in France and only 56 domaines in France have 3 star status.  Only 5 champagne houses have 3 star status including Egly Ouriet together with Krug, Salon, Jacquesson and Selosse.

If there is a champagne you need to taste before you die it is this! … perhaps the best introduction to the wines of Francis Egly – this is a wine that does not require any bottle age.  It is stunning right now! This is all about Grand Cru, low yield Pinot Noir.  Natural fermentation with wild yeasts only.  The first period of the élevage lasts almost one year, with the wine remaining on its fine lees.

This formerly known as Grand Cru Brut Tradition, now is renamed Grand Cru Brut NV.

Vintages 2017 (50%), 2016 (30%) 2015 (20%). Bottling: 2018. Time on lees: 48 months.

Yet another striking release of this wine, made exclusively from superb Grand Cru vineyards (predominantly Ambonnay but also Bouzy and Verzenay). It’s made up of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from low-yielding, perfectly tended vines that have been harvested fully ripe. Natural fermentation was with wild yeasts only and the first period of maturation (before going to bottle) lasted almost one year with the wine remaining on its fine lees for the whole time. The wine clarified slowly and naturally, as was once typical across the region, and as such there was no fining nor filtration. Over 50% of the wine was fermented and aged in oak casks. Dosage is around 3 g/L, Extra Brut territory.
Make no mistake, even with this wine we are already soaring to remarkable heights of quality. If Egly made only his Brut NV, he would still be one of the superstars of the region. The price has risen over the years but it remains a wine that easily backs up this price in the glass. It is perhaps controversial to point it out–but it is nonetheless true–this is a wine that puts to shame many prestige cuvées at considerably higher prices.

93 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate: “With this release, based on the 2014 vintage and disgorged in June-July 2019, what was formerly Egly’s Brut “Tradition becomes simply his NV Brut Grand Cru, a simplification that paves the way for several new cuvées from this reference-point grower that I’ll be reporting about in due course. Changes in nomenclature aside, the wine in the bottle has never been better, and the latest release soars from the glass with an expressive bouquet of golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, citrus zest and freshly baked bread. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, deep and layered, with real concentration and intensity, built around racy acids and chalky dry extract. The finish is long and lingering.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com  “Egly’s NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is another stellar wine in this range. Rich Pinot fruit and a hint of oak give the Brut a decidedly exotic aromatic profile that follows through to the palate. Sweet wild flowers, spice, brioche, red plum and kirsch all open up in the glass. The Brut Grand Cru deftly balances a rich expression of Ambonnay fruit with notable vibrancy and freshness, which makes for an absolutely compelling and enticing NV Champagne. Egly gave the Brut Tradition 48 months on the lees, which is on the long side for a Champagne in its peer group. Disgorged: July, 2019.”
