Description

Jansz Tasmania is a luxury sparkling wine house, solely devoted to the art of sparkling winemaking since 1986. Location is integral to growing outstanding fruit and only Tasmania can boast such idyllic conditions. Put simply, it is the perfect place to craft premium sparkling wines. By allowing nature to do the work, our wines are naturally expressive of our Tasmanian home and its pure, pristine environment. Undeniably Tasmanian. Unmistakably Jansz.

Teresa Heuzenroeder is a celebrated Australian winemaker with over 30 years of experience crafting award-winning cool-climate wines. Combining scientific precision with creative intuition, she is renowned for her expertise in sparkling and white winemaking across cool-climate regions Tasmania, Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley and King Valley. With her scientific background and eye for detail, Teresa discovered her passion for sparkling wine in the intricate balance of art and science. Her dedication to excellence continues to shape the future of Jansz Tasmania and Australian sparkling wine.

Our journey began almost 400 years ago aboard Abel Tasman’s ship, The Heemskerk, when European eyes first caught sight of what would become known as Tasmania, on November 24, 1642. The very same winds that brought Abel Janszoon Tasman here then, blow over this island paradise today and play a vital role in the creation of its unique microclimate.

“Climate has always been central to winemaking and the similarities of Tasmania’s climate to northeast France, along with the rich and free-draining basalt soils, led the famed Champagne house Louis Roederer to partner with Heemskerk Wines and plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines in Pipers River in 1986.

“Like Roederer, the Hill-Smith Family recognised the region’s potential to create world-class sparkling wines. They purchased the property in 1998 and set about establishing one of the most highly regarded family-owned sparkling wine houses in Australia, dedicated to making premium sparkling wines, using the traditional Méthode Champenoise for all its vintage wines. Jansz Tasmania was born.”

Coupling Old World inspiration with New World innovation, Jansz Tasmania crafts this wine from vineyards throughout Tasmania, all of which produce high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, known simply as méthode Tasmanoise. Component wines are kept separate during winemaking to maximise blending options and the complexity of the final wine.

About this wine:  64% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir. Fruit is 100% estate grown from Pipers River & Tamar Valley in the north and Coal River Valley in Tasmania’s south.  Rigorous fruit selection and individual batch winemaking form the basis of this fine Cuvée.

Hand-picking, gentle whole bunch pressing, cool fermentation, 100% malolactic fermentation, complex assemblage and extended ageing on lees after bottle fermentation, all combine to produce a stylish and complex wine. To maximise complexity in the final wine, batches are kept separate during winemaking. Released with a minimum three months of bottle age.

Very pale gold in colour with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose displays aromas of honeysuckle, citrus zest and fresh strawberries from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit. Extended time on lees during secondary fermentation contributes more complex aromas of nougat and roasted nuts. The palate is balanced with delicate fruit flavour, fine creamy texture and a refreshing natural acidity. The finish is dry and fresh with lingering flavours of citrus and nougat. Once released, this wine is ready to enjoy.   A perfect match with natural oysters drizzled with any of our Cuvées (instead of lemon), fritto misto with lemon aioli or grilled garlic asparagus.

94 points, Halliday Wine Companion “Long a staple across the festive season, this is always a quality domestic sparkling and this new base is no exception. Best is the integration: creamy and yet fresh; rich yet ethereal. Neither the yeast-derived toastiness, nor the cool climate acidity, sticking out over the other. Scents of autumnal fruits, nuts, brûlee and nougat pulled long and gently saline.”

93 points, James Halliday’s Top 100 Wines The Weekend Australian, 18 Nov 2023 “The 60/40% chardonnay pinot noir blend is sourced from Pipers River, Tamar Valley and Coal River. It has very good mousse, having spent a minimum of 18 months on yeast lees. It’s mouth-filling, with creamy cashew notes balanced by citrus zest and a dosage of 8.6g/l. Serious non vintage; great value.”
