“No one but no one delivers more quality for the price than Goisot. The quality is flat out amazing, particularly given the modest appellations with which he works.” Allen Meadows, Burghound.com
“This is certainly one of the greatest Yonne estates … The estate is totally biodynamic and makes wines of remarkable purity and concentration … Simply stunning.” Bettane and Desseauve’s Guide to the Wines of France
“Nobody would dispute first Jean-Hugues and now Guilhem Goisot’s right to be considered amongst the very finest producers of the region. I don’t think I have ever had a disappointment in their wines (except not being able to find them!)” Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
As the quotes above make clear, this pioneering biodynamic Yonne domaine (the same department of Burgundy which includes Chablis) produces fabulous, terroir-rich Burgundies, and surely this region’s greatest values. For a Domaine that works in an area that most wine lovers have never heard of, Goisot has earned an unprecedented reputation in France. The late Anne-Claude Leflaive once described Goisot as a “one of the super stars of French winemaking”.
How has such a small, quiet, out-of-the-way grower broken into the Burgundy elite? In short, they farm some of northern Burgundy’s purest limestone vineyards, possess a large proportion of old vines, and cut no corners in their vineyard work and élevage. In fact, the Goisot’s biodynamic work in the vineyard is at a standard that knows few equals (anywhere) and certainly places the Domaine at the very top of the greater Chablis area. Once again there is zero mystery as to where the wine quality derives: quality terroir and zero compromises = top notch, authentic wines.
About this wine: Goisot’s old-vine Aligoté is drawn from parcels of mature vines planted on the high, cool slopes of Saint-Bris. Aligoté is notorious for requiring old vines and suitable soils to produce wines of high quality and Goisot’s holdings nail the brief. The core vineyards include a parcel of 90-year-old Aligoté Doré planted on the high slopes of an old Chardonnay terroir northwest of Saint-Bris. This soil, known as Barrémien, is made up of ancient, dense clay littered with blue-grey fossilised oyster shells, several inches long. Then there is a grouping of 45-year-old vines in the lieux-dits of Croix Rougeot, Côte de Coutance and Côte de la Canne, near Goisot’s Exogyra Virgula vineyard.
Goisot’s biodynamic management and commitment to harvesting ripe, yellow fruit results in a far more textured and pulpy wine than you might typically associate with this variety. Fermented with native yeasts and raised entirely in tank, it is simply a benchmark example of Aligoté, and a wonderful-value white Burgundy.
This wine typifies what Burghound’s Allen Meadows quote above is talking about!
“Hmm – that’s really perfumed – there’s depth to this expressively perfumed nose. Energy, melting with juicy flavour – and plenty of flavour too. The base is mineral but the intensity is that of citrus – subtly strict finishing. A great aligoté !!” Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
“Quite a complex saline nose, lemon scented plums and just when it seems almost too enjoyable it settles down behind with a delicious limestone mineral finish. Very persistent.”
Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
