Description

Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.

Winery notes about this release: “Tasmania is an extraordinary place for Riesling with its potential to produce some of the nation’s finest. Freycinet Rieslings have a fine pedigree stretching back 23 years to 1998 when the first 100% varietal riesling was produced, gaining high praise and considerable recognition along the way. We are particularly passionate and excited about riesling at Freycinet. Our philosophy is to showcase the purity of riesling aroma and flavour in the wine. This begins with growing moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit in the vineyard. Vines are all hand pruned and hand harvested. In the winery a very careful, protective approach is utilised to ensure the delicate yet intense aromas and flavours are not lost. Key to this is a very slow fermentation at cool temperatures.”

“The 2023 vintage brought lower than average yields and cooler conditions throughout the growing season. Fruit quality was excellent with small bunches and berries providing superb concentration of flavours, fine supple tannins and good acid balance.

Half the pleasure of riesling for us is the delicate floral perfume reminiscent of gardenias and orange blossom and which the 2023 Freycinet Riesling reveals in spades.
The vibrant yet elegant palate offers a heady mix of citrus, green apple, white nectarine and gentle spice, complemented by a crisp and refreshing minerality. The excellent natural acid retention of a cool vintage, balanced with 2.94 g/L of residual sugar delivers scintillating tension. This wine has all the hallmarks of a classic Riesling vintage, built for the long haul in the cellar.”

Reviews of 2022 95 points, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion “A truly lovely example of East Coast riesling with a long history of success. This has an abundant and fragrant lime/lemon bouquet which is front and centre in the mouth. Tasmanian acidity is there, of course, but it’s folded into the bosom of the fruit.”
