Description
Kumeu River, northwest of Auckland is without a doubt on of NZ’s finest wine producers … their chardonnays are world renowned. Made by Master of Wine Michael Brajkovich from sustainably grown Pinot Gris grapes that are hand-harvested and sorted, then gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermented using local wild yeast with extended maturation on the yeast lees.
The aromas have typical peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral perfume that we have come to expect from Pinot Gris. The wine is lively with a lovely line of acidity , complex and lingers on the palate. Pinot Gris is a variety that goes particularly well with food, including quite intensely flavoured dishes. It is also one of the few wine styles that can handle the spiciness of chilli.
17.5+/20, Raymond Chan, Feb 2018 “Bright straw-yellow colour with pale gold tints and some depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full with aromatic white stonefruits along with peaches and hints of honeysuckle with lifted savoury florals, and a taut core of steely minerals. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has elegant, intensely penetrating flavours of white and yellow stonefruits along with savoury florals and hints of honeysuckle and mineral detail. The mouthfeel is fresh, zesty and steely with bright acidity, and the palate has good linearity, flowing along a light, phenolic line, leading to a lingering dry finish with a little textural grip. This is a fresh and lively dry Pinot Gris with good depth and intensity of steely stonefruit flavours with honeysuckle notes. Match with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese fare over the next 2-3 years. Hand-picked Kumeu fruit, WBP and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc. and 4.4 g/L RS, the wine given extended maturation on lees. “
