“Chardonnay, too, reaches Burgundian levels of pristine complexity in the hands of producers such as Neudorf.” — David Williams, The Guardian UK 10 September 2015
“I have a thing for Kiwi Chardonnay. Its day will come. It doesn’t currently get the respect it deserves, but with wines like these from Neudorf … things will change.” Jamie Goode’s Wine Blog.
“I cannot think of another New Zealand wine producer that has been making top wines across their entire range as consistently as Neudorf over three decades. Chardonnay is the star with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc very close behind.” Bob Campbell MW
“One of New Zealand’s most admired producers. Tim and Judy Finn have a great track record.” Jancis Robinson MW, 2012
The pristine and spectacularly beautiful Nelson region in the south island of NZ and in particular the Clay Gravel Moutere Hills area receive lots of sun (more than 2300 hours a year) making it one of New Zealand’s sunniest regions a real bonus for such a cool climate region. Clear skies allow for rapid cooling at night, nurturing the slow development of flavours and a gradual reduction in fruit acids. This combination of climate and soil type produces white wines of concentration and texture, and rich savoury Pinot Noir with a fingerprint of textured minerally fruit acid.
Established in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, Neudorf use sustainable practices and the winery is accredited under the Sustainable Winery NZ scheme, which Tim was instrumental in establishing back in the early 80’s. Winemaker Todd Stevens aim is always to allow the site to speak. Great wines have a basis of fruit concentration, length and sense of place – characters which can be formed only in the vineyard.
“A taut wine that’s approachable but with plenty of potential. Beautifully balanced, with edgy acidity adding delicious tension. 97 Points, 5 Stars.” New Zealand’s Top 2017 Chardonnay – Bob Campbell MW
From the winery: “We’ve been producing Chardonnay since 1981 and over the past 37 vintages we’ve learnt to relax and let it be. Our soils, climate and minimal interventionist winemaking enable the pedigree to exhibit itself year after year.
The Neudorf Moutere style is assured – never too overt, everything in balance with moreish salty tang, reminiscent of sun-dried oyster shells. It’s always surprisingly long with a final fan of flavour at the end of the palate. It offers a transparent, crystalline appeal. The oak over the years has slowly been dialled back. Todd uses only 10% new barrels and the oak is beautifully absorbed into the wine.
Over the years the wine has earned a reputation for consistency and class. It is still the only wine which has been granted 100 points from Bob Campbell MW. We’re truly excited to release this wine. The long hot summer of 2019, provided ideal growing conditions. While always special, this vintage in particular encapsulates everything that makes Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay what it is. Textural with trademark power but not an ounce of heaviness. Impeccable length and shape. Cohesive, sleek and elegant; a wine to remember.
“Flagship chardonnay with an attractively modified label and now called Home Block Moutere rather than Moutere. The product of a hot, dry vintage. Bright, crisp, high-energy chardonnay with grapefruit, citrus, oyster-shell, hazelnut, and subtle baguette crust flavours supported by tangy acidity. A youthful wine that deserves at least a couple of more years in bottle to reveal its full potential.”

Reveiws of 2017:
“Rich, firm and silky-textured. A real success for the vintage. The lightest of hints of top quality oak. Polished and refreshing with hints of lime and honey. Bracing and clean as a whistle, even if not amazingly persistent. 16.5 Points.” Jancis Robinson
“Neudorf continues as one of the most consistent sources of structured, focused and powerful New Zealand chardonnay with their Moutere 2017.” Nick Stock for James Suckling
“The palate is elegant in presentation with brisk, refreshing and lively flavours of white and yellow stonefruits along with subtle notes of nutty oak. The palate is one of finesse, freshness and vibrancy, and builds a fine core with good acid vitality. The flavours flow along a very fine line leading to a fresh, detailed finish. This is an elegant, refreshingly vibrant Chardonnay with subtly building flavours and complexities on a fine and lively palate. 18.5+/20.” Raymond Chan
