Description
Château Mont-Redon will be familiar to those who know and love Châteauneuf-du-Pape being well recognized as the owners of some of the most highly regarded vineyard sites in the appellation. The superb quality of its 100 hectares of vineyards has been recognized throughout history and date back to the 14th Century. Prior to the change of the appellation controlee system it was one of the few “Grand cru’s” in the region (together with Chateau Rayas), and producing some of the most elegant of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
This wine comes from their vineyards in Lirac, situated on the opposite bank of the Rhone River to Chateauneuf-du-Pape between the towns of Orange and Avignon. They have been crafting wines here since 1997 in the shadow of its famous appellation neighbour on similar soils of sand and pebbles. Summers are dry and hot with the warm mistral winds keeping away any humidity.
They have all the classic floral notes and aromatics you’d expect from a great Chateauneuf-du-Pape at half the price – all handpicked and selected fruit which ensures absolute quality. This is the holy grail of quality and value .. dark, dense, fine, long, balanced.. everything you’d expect from Chateauneuf-du-Pape at a fraction of the price.
New 2020 vintage is here .. About the vintage by John Livingstone-Learmonth “A vintage of harmony. Harmony is the word of the vintage, with aromatics good on the leaders. The best wines hold very attractive fruit, with tannins well on the inside. Where tannins are noticeable – and dry – that is more due to the grower extracting too hard than the harvest serving very thick skins. Summer 2020 can be considered solar, but the wines often don’t reflect that, with a notch of balance that will be apparent among the most charming. Degrees are a little lower than 2019, perhaps 0.5° here and there. In wines of insufficient natural depth, the alcohol can stand out, therefore.”
70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre totally de-stemmed with ferment up to 3 weeks and aged 2/3 in tank and 1/3 in barrel for 18 months before assembling and bottling and ageing another 4 months under cork before sale. These vineyards were purchased in 1997.
“dark red colour; the bouquet is starting to emerge, shows a low-key blackberry fruit, a mingle of herbs, a vegetal touch. The palate comes with soft richness, is already opening up, has a late peppery note, the tannins still undercooked, so go for this from 2+ years more. It’s workmanlike Lirac, has vintage restraint, not a lot of structure, is correct, even if that means it has the problem of technical dullness. 2030-32’ John Livingstone-Learmonth. drinkrhone.com, October 2021.
