Description

It’s not often in this business that you get bowled over by every wine in a winery’s lineup.  Well that happened to us when we first tried Yangarra Estate Wines. Their rich and beautifully balanced Rhone varieties are so damn impressive and why they are regarded as making the best wines coming out of McLaren Vale!

The philosophy of this award-winning biodynamic producer is 100% estate grown fruit with devotion to the best grape varieties of the southern Rhone …shiraz, grenache, mourvedre, viognier and roussane.  Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and cool evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in these moderate maritime environments.

“Venerable vines, fastidious viticulture and cutting-edge winemaking kit. It’s a killer combination, and the reason why Yangarra is producing some of the best wines in the Vale right now.” – Max Allen, The Weekend Australian

Ironheart represents the most elite Shiraz from Yangarra’s single vineyard estate in Kangarilla, McLaren Vale.  The name Ironheart captures the red-ish ironstone soils, along with the passion and soulful dedication to the soil vineyard and winemaking.

About this wine from the winemaker:”Ironheart is the flagship Shiraz from our single vineyard estate in Blewitt Springs at the northern edge of McLaren Vale. The vineyard’s northern aspect, higher elevation and sandy ironstone soils produce Shiraz with immense concentration and finesse.

The growing season was affected by a very hot spring, leading to the lowest yields on record. As the grapes started their ripening process the weather miraculously cooled to a very mild ripening season. This resulted in wonderful concentration of flavour, retention of natural acidity and brightness of fruit, but above all, beautiful finesse, and balanced tannins.

Hand-picked (21st March), 20% whole bunches, and the remainder has been destemmed, mechanical berry sorted, 30% whole berries and 50% crushed. Open fermenters and on skins for approximately 21 days. A gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Kept on lees for 16 months in 1 year old foudre. Bottled November 2021. Certified Organic/Biodynamic. 13.5% alc.

95 points, Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion “.. This is a refined wine boasting a meander of sinewy tannins, like a songline across the palate. It doesn’t play any cards not dealt, the inherent freshness derived from organic principles and impeccable fruit quality, glimpsing a southern Rhône-style, despite the variety.”

95 points, James Suckling This is an open and focused red with blackberry, cloves and dried flowers. Pencil shavings, too. Some black cherry. Medium to full body, firm and balanced, fresh and bright. Peppery. Flavorful and savory. Open for this wine already. From biodynamically grown grapes.”

95 points, Aaron Brasher, The Real ReviewRuby red and very youthful in the glass. Heady, dark fruited aromas of mulberry and plum intertwined with licorice, sweet spice and clovey oak. Plush and mouth-filling. There’s real power and presence in the dark fruited richness, balanced out nicely by textured, structured tannins and spot-on acidity. A wine of power, presence and lovely balance.”
