Description

Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene (Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards (some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention – wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid).
Huon Hooke said: “ Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…” Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, from leading international website erobertparker.com said – “..a breath of fresh air in this area where a lot of producers seem to be following the herd down that incredibly ripe and sometimes over-ripe path that has caused not a few producers to come unstuck in heat-wave and drought conditions. These are superbly-crafted, well-priced wines that are wholeheartedly recommended’

From the winemaker: “The Mourvèdre grape thrives in warmer climates where this late ripening variety can achieve good colour and depth of flavour. Our fruit is sourced from the Willunga district of McLaren Vale, where grown in a warm maritime on Biscay soils the grapes ripen with a deep hue and delightful array of flavours and aromas.

Perfumed aromas offer game and fresh herb intertwined with blueberry and plum notes. A softly textured palate provides an array of juicy berry fruits, lavender and exotic spices framed by smoky oak and silky tannins. Drink now to 2025.  Alc 14.5%” This delicious medium weight vino brims with violets… its juicy and dangerously easy to drink.

94 points, James Halliday “The absence of fining and/or filtration results in slight turbidity to the colour, although the hue is good. Not the easiest variety to make as a 100% varietal, but Coates succeeds here with plush purple fruits and spices running through the medium-bodied, well balanced palate.”

90 points, Toni Patterson MW, The Real Review  This is a lighter-bodied style of mourvèdre with a lovely fragrance and a sweet-fruited silky mid-palate. There is brightness to the fruit and a little rustic earthiness, commonly seen with this variety. It is a lovely expression of mourvèdre. Serve with a hearty coq-au-vin.”
