Description
Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced predominantly from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!
The Merricks Chardonnay, from 26-year-old vines grown on soils of grey loams and red ferrosols on south and south-east facing slopes, was hand-harvested and hand-sorted before it was whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation was natural with high levels of solids in François Frères 500-litre puncheons (20% new). A small portion went through natural malolactic fermentation and the wine then rested on full gross lees for nine months before bottling. Flanders seeks out slow and long lees interaction, choosing extended, gentle contact over bâtonnage for all his Chardonnays.
Just bursting with bright citrus, mineral and floral aromas with a background note of that struck match reduction. Intense citrus flavours and perfectly pitched, juicy texture are matched by beautifully integrated acidity, linear drive, just a touch of grip and a mineral-flecked finish. We’re knee-deep in best territory for this label, and it feels good.
96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “It never ceases to amaze me, when tasting lots of wine, to come across one – or several, as is the case of this producer and think, these wines are made for drinking right now. As in, I need to drink them right now. Lovely to do so. This is pristine, refined and long. Citrus, radish and just-ripe white stone fruit with succulence throughout. White miso and creamy lees, textural and acidity leading all the way.”
95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “In some respects, you could say the more expensive Terre Maritime is the ‘better’ wine, though I kind of prefer the comeliness and flavour presented here.
Lime, grapefruit, green mango, cedar, aniseed and spice, almond. It’s tight, juicy in mixed citrus and subtle tropical fruit, lots of flint and chalk and pippy grip to acidity, tang and zest, cool cucumber and citrus acidity, slightly peppery, with some struck match complexity, and a long savoury finish. Excellent.”
