Juniper Estate from Wilyabrup, in the heart of the Margaret River winegrowing area are some of the oldest vineyards in the area. The maritime influence of the Indian ocean and Mediterranean climate makes Margaret River ideal for premium grape growing…. the spectacular backdrop of hardwood forests and pristine coastline lifts my spirit every visit!
Winemaker Mark Messenger’s meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the vineyard and winery is on show here. Juniper Estate “Acquitaine” Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is a very sexy and very well structured wine. This wine has intense citrus notes of lemon, lime and grapefruit with savoury notes from lees contact. Barrel fermentation adds loads of texture and interest whilst powerful acidity keeps things balanced. This is definitely an age worthy wine.
From the winemaker… “The combination of the climate & soil of Margaret River has many similarities to that of Bordeaux. Hence it is not surprising that the blending of semillon (50%) & sauvignon blanc (50%) works so well. At Juniper Estate we are aiming to produce a fine, elegant and complex wine with medium term cellaring potential. The use of free range yeast, barrel fermentation in tight grained French oak and maturation on yeast lees are used to build texture, structure and layered complexity without dominating the fruit characters maintaining elegance in the wine. We’ve named this special wine “Aquitaine” in honour of this French region that inspired us.”
96 points James Halliday Australian Wine Companion “An estate grown blend of equal quantities of semillon and sauvignon blanc, whole bunch pressed and wild yeast barrel fermented in French barriques (25% new) followed by 10 months maturation. It has remarkable intensity and length, lemon rind ex the semillon giving a laser like feel to the bigger picture of the palate profile, and also contributing to the length and vibrancy of the palate. The endpoint is one of harmony joined at the hip.”
