“Weil is widely seen as the jewel of Rheingau.” Jancis Robinson, The Financial Times
“Robert Weil has been one of the icons of German wine culture for many years. Nothing but the finest Rieslings are produced. And as more than 100 years ago, the wines are distinguished in terms of their origins and their style.” Stephan Reinhardt, The Finest Wines of Germany
“The style of Robert Weil wines is unmistakable […] mineral, citrus-fruit flavor in the dry wines with no angular acidity and a crescendo of concentration and white peach fruit in the sweet wines.” Freddy Price, Riesling Renaissance
According to Wilhelm Weil, “2017 is the best vintage I have produced here in 30 years,” Obviously that’s a pretty big call, and yet Weil is obviously well qualified to make it. It could have turned out somewhat differently. Spring frost and dramatic summer hail wreaked havoc across the Rheingau, yet this Domaine’s steep vineyards—cosseted by the high altitude Kiedrich basin—fared substantially better than many of their neighbours in Central Rheingau (some of who lost up to 50% of their crop). Come late August, however, the vintage was humming on all cylinders. The grapes for the dry wines were harvested in crystalline condition without any botrytis around the middle of October, followed by the grapes for the Prädikat wines, which were topped by selections for both Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese by the end of the month.
“2017 is a great vintage for Robert Weil, and not a single wine falls behind the highest expectations.” Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
From the importer:
This is Weil’s ‘villages’ level Riesling, from the village of Kiedrich. The fruit here comes exclusively from the top, classified, hillside, Estate sites of Klosterberg, Turmberg and Gräfenberg. It’s a blend of younger vine material, as well as first-picked parcels from these sites. As you would expect from such terroir, it has more texture and power. It’s full of pulpy stone fruit, citrus rind goodness, and is driven by intense, tangy, mineral freshness. There’s plenty of flesh but the wine simply dances across the palate. The style is archetypal Kiedrich (i.e. mineral, high grown and driven) and beautifully expresses both its origins and the meticulous culture behind the wine.
92 points, Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate “The 2017 Kiedricher Riesling Trocken is very clear, fine and fresh on the concentrated and well-defined nose. Sourced from younger vines from Erste and Grosse Lagen plus Wasseross, this is a highly elegant, finessed and mouth-filling Riesling with gorgeous balance and juicy fruit. This amazing Riesling needs to be enjoyed today and over the next 20 years. A Must Buy!”
