Description
Koehler-Ruprecht is one of the oldest, most distinctive wineries in the Pfalz region. These wines are made using only the finest hand-selected grapes, which undergo spontaneous fermentation in very old wooden barrels. These amazingly long-living Rieslings buck the trend when it comes to what we have more recently come to understand as dry German Riesling. People in the know, know there’s nothing like it. “Kallstadt is home to one of the greatest dry white wines in the world. Yes, I’m talking about the dry Saumagen Riesling from Koehler-Ruprecht,” writes Stuart Pigott, author of Best White Wine on Earth.
And of its current winemaker, a smiley chap with excellent English, Wine Advocate’s Stephen Reinhardt says: “Dominik Sona, 36, does a lot of travelling to sell the wines, which remain excellent and seem to have become even more precise and reliable in all categories.”
The Saumagen vineyard in Kallstadt is one of the most highly prized sites in Pfalz and indeed of all of Germany.
It has calcareaous soils on a south facing slope and delivers wines with especially high minerality and ageing potential.
Wow we were floored by this wine in a recent tasting! …laser like purity & depth of fruit with a beautifully balanced dry finish (not showing a glimpse of bottle age) Extraordinary drinking for quality and price.
