Description
The iconic and historic Wendouree vineyard was planted in the Clare Valley in 1893 and is renowned for its full bodied reds which are often described as “iron fist in a velvet glove”. Minuscule yields from ancient (many untrellised) bush vines of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, mataro and malbec. Stephen George has been winemaker there since 1981 and described the vineyard as “…an incredible place – even in severe drought the vineyard is green when the rest of Clare is irrigating madly – the dry grown vineyard roots have burrowed down so deep over the years to find water and all the trace elements needed..”
Here is their delicious lightly fortified dessert wine blended across three vintages 2016, 2017 & 2018 made from 1940 eastern vineyard muscat plantings from the iconic Wendouree vineyard in Clare.
Very Limited! 375 ml bottles.
94 points, Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion “A blend of ’16, ’17 and ’18 wines. A gentle fortification is applied to the wine. The fruit comes from the ’40-planted Eastern vineyard. The fortification elevates the wine and adds depth; underlying is a vivid, sweet wine showing off classic crème brûlée characters with faint, sweet sherry notes with distinct preserved lemon, lemon butter, candied ginger, cumquat and lime jelly elements in tow. There’s a suppleness to texture married to an inherent stickiness and gummy chew. It’s a superb expression of dessert-ish wine, lively, intriguing and downright gulpable. That it is complex, nuanced and original helps things too. Magnificent stuff.”
