Description
The iconic and historic Wendouree vineyard was planted in the Clare Valley in 1893 and is renowned for its full bodied reds which are often described as “iron fist in a velvet glove”. Minuscule yields from ancient (many untrellised) bush vines of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, mataro and malbec. Stephen George has been winemaker there since 1981 and described the vineyard as “…an incredible place – even in severe drought the vineyard is green when the rest of Clare is irrigating madly – the dry grown vineyard roots have burrowed down so deep over the years to find water and all the trace elements needed..”
Here is their delicious fortified dessert wine made from 1940 eastern vineyard muscat plantings from the iconic Wendouree vineyard in Clare.

95 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “From muscat vines planted in the 1940s. Sweet as. An epic, bold wine. What else to say? Powerful sweet wine of light honey, lemon curd, faint brulee and orange marmalade notes. While it sounds sweet, the palate delivers, yes, sweetness, but also a lot of cut from bright acidity. It’s oily, but not overwhelming, drives with assertive concentration yet great freshness and a whip crack of delicious mandarin juice to close. This is quite a thing. A very good, very complex, very easy to like dessert wine. Wonderful. I had mine as a Friday night ‘knock off drink’ and went for seconds.”
