Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!
From the winemaker: Hand sorted in the vineyard and again in the winery over a sorting table, whole bunch pressed, native yeast ferment and all old neutral barrels used. Partial malo and aged on lees for 6 months.
The wine displays aromas of spiced apple/pear notes, honey, and citrus pith. The palate is textured and long, pear, nutmeg and honey, with vibrant acid. Limited
92 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “It smells sweet with fruit but it quickly turns more serious. This is pinot gris with attitude. Nectarine, dry pear, brine and wheat-like characters charge through the palate, slowed only by a gentle grippiness through the back half of the wine. It’s all quite scrummy, really. ” 13% alc
