Description
Coutet is one of the leading Chateaux in the Barsac sub-district of Sauternes. Their wines are typically noted for their elegance and style rather than weight and richness.
In 1855, the estate was classified as a First Growth and recognized for its continued excellence. Today, as the oldest and largest Barsac estate, Chateau Coutet stays true to its tradition of distinction and quality. The finest Barsac-Sauternes is produced annually under the direction and management of the Baly family as well as the technical and commercial collaboration of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. company, the vineyard’s exclusive distributor.
At 38.5 hectares in size, Coutet is one of the largest vineyards in the region, with plantings consisting of 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrel of which 50% are new with further ageing in oak for 18 months.
A deep golden colour, the vintage’s first aromatic sensation impresses one by its richness, mixing the typical notes of a beautiful botrytisation (citrus, exotic and candied fruits, as well as hints of honey) with more delicate, slightly spicy, subtle and elegant touches. On the palate, a great complexity springs up, blending volume and roundness with notes of candied fruits, plum brandy, cherry plum liquor, as well as more classic notes typical of the ageing process such as well-integrated vanilla, caramel, toffee, but also milk spices and white pepper. The finish is expressive, powerful, warm, and quite long, giving back a very pleasant freshness thanks to notes of candied orange zests.
96 – 98 points, Robert Parker The Wine Advocate “Beautiful color. Full of roasted notes on the nose along with dried apricot and pineapple, airy. Beautiful on the palate, very rich, yet fresh with aromas of spice. Very lovely balance – a harmonious wine.
The Coutet 2009 is a sensational effort from Philippe Baly and his team. It has a fragrant nose of honey, verbena tea, pineapple, frangipane and apple-blossom, well defined if needing a little more vigor at the moment. The palate is vibrant on the entry, informed by touches of apricot and orange peel, very focused and tensile towards the long, sensuous, viscous finish. It has the same minerality exuded by Doisy-Daëne and reminds me of a stellar ’62 tasted just a few weeks previously. A magnificent Coutet.”
96 points James Suckling “A triumph for the vintage with spices, dried mushroom, dried pineapple, peaches, and honey. Full and sweet with bright acidity and a long, intense finish. Powerful wine. This could be the best Coutet ever. (5/2013)”
